COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Tried it on tap along with an Allagash Odyssey at the Flying Saucer in San Antonio. The Allagash was spicy and complex but with very thin body. This Bro Theo was caramelly sweeter, but less complex, and really not all that sumptious in body either. It’s disappointing to have to try so hard to try and enjoy something in an itty bitty snifter. I wouldn’t get it again. Kept wishing I had simply gotten the St. Bernardus 12.

Bottle. Clear dark amber with small creamy beige head, caramel aroma, slightly sweet caramel taste, low carbonation, thin body, long bitter caramel finish. A bit like an ESB, caramel/malt dominated.

Brown color with an off-white head with good retention. Aroma has notes of toasted and sweet malts, some dry fruits. Flavor is slightly sweet, good presence of alcohol, spicy and some yeast with caramelish notes. Mild alcoholic final with smooth aftertaste.

The beer has a beautiful look. The color is a delicious ruby red, almost dark amber. A beautiful red/orange glow comes den the beer. The beer is quite clear. On top of the beer a nice layer of almond colored soft foam is formed. The bulk of the foam collapses, but a nice drape of foam remains on top of the beer. The smell of the beer is nice. It’s a nice Belgian quadruppel smell. There is a strong yeast aroma. The yeast gives the beer a nice raisin touch. It’s nice and sweet, a little fruity with some bananas and there is a nice bitterness. I clearly smell the alcohol. Very nice. I think the brewers created exactly what they’ve wanted. The taste is also nice. Again, there is a strong yeast flavor. This gives some banana and raisin flavors to the beer. I also taste some licorice and some touches of mint. There is also a nice almondy alcohol flavor. I love the yeasty touch. It really reminds me of Belgian beers and Trappists. They’ve truly succeeded with this beer. Good work.

Draft @ Kompaan. Pours a clear darker amber beer with a small off white head on top. Aroma is very, very malty, sugary and rather boozy with hints of caramel. Flavor is sweet and strong, again loads of malts. Could almost be a barley wine, but the yeast makes it more soft. Silky mouthfeel, long, sweet aftertaste and strong alcoholic kick in the end. Nice one.

Malty caramel raisin nose with hint of over-ripe bananas. Mid sweet with just enough bittering, no harshness, hint of raisins. Medium creamy body and a pleasant sweet finish with just a hint of astringency. A good, but not exceptional Belgian strong ale. But a bargain at $5.99 at Costco!

Aroma is light, dark fruit, raisins, caramel, toffee, booze. Appearance is dark brown red, light tan head. Taste is sweet malt, caramel, robust bitterness coming through from the malt, dark fruit, raisins, figs, booze, decent. Mouthfeel is medium body, light crisp carbonation, boozy caramel aftertaste. Overall, this one is better than expected but still not great.

Tolles Etikett also. Bier 3/7.
