With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Tried it on tap along with an Allagash Odyssey at the Flying Saucer in San Antonio. The Allagash was spicy and complex but with very thin body. This Bro Theo was caramelly sweeter, but less complex, and really not all that sumptious in body either. It’s disappointing to have to try so hard to try and enjoy something in an itty bitty snifter. I wouldn’t get it again. Kept wishing I had simply gotten the St. Bernardus 12.

Bottle; pours brown with a beige head; sweet aroma of caramel, yeast, and dark fruits with a little sugar; taste is sweet with caramel, dark fruits, and yeast; finish is sweet with a little bit of spice; the beer is sweet throughout but not overpoweringly so; excellent beer

Bottle. Raisin, apple, toffee malt, and straw aroma. Dark amber with small head. Mildly sweet raisin, toffee malt, and moderately bitter herbal citrus peel flavor. Decent body. Pretty good but kind of light.

Bottle in LA. Pours clear deep brown with brown head. Dark fruit aromas are present but a bit subtle, they become a little stronger as it warms. Mild sweetness up front, but dry smooth finish. Pretty bang on style. Great USA-brewed Belgian dark strong.

Ligger väl i linje med förväntningarna på stilen. Kanske något mesigare en än belgare.

Avermelhada, âmbar. Espuma cremosa, amarelada, boa formação e persistente. Malte bastante presente, caramelado, alcoólica, morango, frutas vermelhas. Paladar de malte e frutas vermelhas. Corpo licoroso, média carbonatação. Aftertaste persistente, adocicado, seguindo bastante as impressões do paladar. Muito boa.
