COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, itís time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewingís new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian ďDark Strong AleĒ, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

2009 bottle, listed at 9.4% abv. Sweet smell with some maple and molasses to it. Rich brown color with a clingy thin head. Taste is pretty sweet, but not cloying. Has rich complex backing of molasses, and sweet pipe tobacco I used to get my dad on Fatherís Day. Feels like some oak here, but nothing in here says this has been in a barrel. Just part of the complexity. No noticeable bitterness. Bits of sherry and bourbon, some dark fruit, round out the complex character here. Holds up well when aged for 4 years!

Great ballance between spicey and sweet, peppery notes. Raisins, dried apricot, really great brew, easy drinkable for 9.4 ABV. Great sipping ale.

From a bottle. Pours a cinnamon-brown Cole and makes a very thin head. Smells like an old abbey ale. Smells of caramel and dark fruits and cinnamon. Tastes of malt and toffee and caramel. This is a great ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a hazy brown colour with an off-white head. Aroma is malt, caramel, toffee and fruit. Taste is high sweet leading to a sweet caramel finish. Decent.

Pours a 1/2 finger head. Clear dark ruby impressive highlights through the light. Dark fruit w a touch of bananas on the nose. Smooth mouthfeel. Taste is a combo of the dark fruit w the bananas more prevalent. Maybe a slight touch of dark rum too. Warming. One of my favs from his great brewery. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Deep brown, cloud pour with a long lasting, tight pale brown head. Toffee, dried fruit, spice . Taste is fairly sweet, rum and raisin, caramel, a little boozy.

Whoa.. super good surprise. Feels quite "quady". Sweet caramel maltiness, Belgian yeast, toffee, quite fruity, dried fruits, raisins, banana, spices, brown sugar. Moderate to heavy sweet, with moderate to light bitterness. Cant compete with top quads, but still very enjoyable and must try moar :D

Pours beautiful chestnut brown with large head. Sweet, malty raisin aroma. Dominating raisin flavour with cinnamon and caramel. On the sweet side, but I like that. Very good.

Heavey syrupy and raisin- color is right, carbonation is low and taste.... well-I donít agree with the high marks given this beer considering the aspirations ( Abbey Ale) and the price (close to $90 in PA) for those who would discount my opinion feel free to disregard it - but let me say that I have been a hobby all grain brewer for decades and have taken the road trip through Belgium and Northern France and been to many abbey breweries and craft breweries in that world. The best abbey beers a are very different in taste and appearance but they all have something in common and that is balance. An Orval that is available at the local tavern and the Westvleteren that is nearly unobtainable anywhere share this quality although they are completely different beers. Iíve enjoyed both. The North Coast Thelonius IMHO is a high alcohol, syrupy attempt at the Westy 12, and in that is a total failure in the attempt... it has the right color and is high gravity but is not clean or balanced like a Westvleteren. Iím sorry I bought a case because I really donít even want to drink it
