With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

12 ounce bottle- poured out a beautiful, translucent, ruby/auburn with a moderate, well formed cola head. Minor sediment in the bottom of the bottle as is proper for this ale. Aroma was all dark fruit, not cloying, but pervasive. Dark, candied fruit and a sweet caramel taste with a Champagne-like carbonation, damned near perfect. Palate was thick, smooth and pleasing. A new number 1 for me. Well done, North Coast!

Bottle, 355ml. Deep ruby with a minimal brown head. Intense fruity aroma of banana, clove, red fruits, alcohol. Medium to robust bodied with moderate carbonation. Sweet, with low bitterness. Fruity and pleasant, with a fiery fruit and alcohol finish. Very nice.

Bottle, 355ml. A dark reddish beer with a small head. Aroma is of a typical Belgian Style beer (according to Bear to a Quadrupel) with Belgian yeasts, caramel, spices, banana and alcohol. Taste is bitter with a strong alcoholic finish. Medium bodied with some carbonation and astrinency. Reminds me a lot of a Quadrupel.

Tastes reminds me of Jaeger unfortunately. Liquorice, raisin, very alcoholic taste. Really not that special sadly. Light in terms of weight. Maybe I just don’t like Belgian style abbey ales or Belgian strong ales if that’s what it really is. This is my first of the four pack so we’ll if it grows on me.

Wow impressed by the complexity of the taste in this beer. Pour is a beautiful amber with a small head. Flavor is tangy but appropriate for this kind of beer.

Dark amber-reddish color with small white head. Aroma is prunes, chocolate, a bit nutty. Taste is sweet, dark fruits, a bit booze. Okay complexity, could be a bit more edgy. Smooth carbonation. Not bad!

Deep abbey style beer with a nutty brown complexion and a serious punch. 9.4% alcohol per volume hits you pretty hard after a couple. Smooth flavor that lends itself to enjoying slowly. There is a fruity aftertaste which is almost raisin like but also hart a bit of a tart taste like a cranberry. It's hard to explain but will make sense when you try this beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A chestnut brown, a head is big and beige. Aroma has richness of fruits, raisins and dates, also some red berries and spices. Taste has dried fruits, prunes and dates, hint of power of alcohol. Medium+ bodied, pleasand and smooth palate. Almost 10 months old, now nicely smooth and balanced, could be more complex. Dried fruits in the liquid format.
