COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Pours a dark amber colour, with nearly no carbonation and very little head. Smells roast with a bit of a nasty acetate edge to it. The palette is thin, and watery, with not much spark to it. Taste is inoffensive, with sweet caramels and a pleasant aftertaste. Wouldn’t be my first choice of beer, but passable.

Bottle from Toft Vin, CPH - dark sienna brown pour with off white head. Aroma and taste comprises medium sweet caramel malts, doughy yeasty, dark dried fruit, brown sugar, treacle, medium subtle boozy warming, really liked this.

Deep, dark red-brown pour with off-white head that quickly disappears. Aroma of sweet fruits and malt, translate well into the flavor with some alcohol, and as some have mentioned - a bit of red wine, especially on the finish which is dry. Tasty stuff.

Pours a rich mahogany with a finger of head. Nose is figs, raisin, Belgian yeast, a bit red winey. Taste is very dark fruity, tons of fig, raisins, bit of spicy yeast character on the finish, effervescent. Medium to full body. It's borderline too sweet, but treads the line. Very good.

12 oz bottle into a tulip. Pours a dark brown, with a moderate tan head that persists. Nose is dark malt and kandi sugar, with some dark fruit. Taste is malt and dark fruit, with the typical Belgian yeast clove and banana notes. Well balanced, smooth, and delicious.

Aroma is Belgian candy sugar, sweet malts, dark fruits and light yeast and banana. Taste is very nice sweet malts with plum, raisin and candy sugar. Light bitterness on finish and well balanced. Appearance is a clear amber with a thin pearl head that retains fairly poorly.

small frothy offwhite head. fair lacing. fully diminishing. flat thick dark amberish-brown body. aroma: heavy malty, wood, raisin and alcohol. if: heavy sweet light bitter. ff: moderate sweet light bitter; long duration. palate: light medium body, oily texture, lively carbonation, moderate alcoholic finish. 180 s

12oz bottle from Liquor barn in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Poured into a shaker pint. Beautiful reddish brown color with soapy off-white head. Bready and dark fruit aroma present. Really feels like an authentic Belgian beer. Alcohol is masked well. Smooth and dangerously easy to drink.
