A rustic ale, pale in color, inspired by the rich brewing traditions of the Flanders region. Abundant hops and a Belgian yeast strain contribute exotic aromas af tropical fruit.

Editor’s Note: previously known as Whole Foods Silver Jubilee.

Pours a hazy straw. Aroma is perfumed hay and dried flowers. Taste is the same mixed with some biscuity bits. Can’t get into it.

[Bottle] Pours golden in color. Slightly hazy and with a creamy white head. Cereal grains, mild citrus funk and lemongrass in the nose. Tart orange and lemon zest blends with toast and biscuits. Not very funky, but smooth and drinkable. Pretty good. Tasting notes from 2/2014.

Bottle. Slightly cloudy straw color with a foamy white head. Yeast, dough, and cranberries on the nose. Taste is similar with a tart finish. Good body and the carbonation makes for a crisp and refreshing palate.

What the funk? Meaty tropical fruit mash-up aroma with yeast and metal . Glowing copper, fairly still. Coppery, salty sweet taste, has more in common with the strong bieres de garde than most saisons. There seems to be a tendency to imperialize everything, but here the result is quite good. Slick and sharp at once. Formerly a Whole Foods contract brew? Not in these parts anyway.

750 ml corked and caged bottle. Cloudy pale yellow orange, big white creamy foam slowly settles and mostly lasts. Luscious tropical fruity aroma, spicy and yeasty. Yeasty tropical fruit taste, citrus, some bitter farmyard funk, mild sweet malts. Lively carbonation, medium bodied, moderately hopped. ABV well hidden. Tartens a bit, finishes yeasty bitter. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

August 30th, 2011 - Despite the name, and pronouncements to the contrary from North Coast’s webpage, I found La Merle to taste much more like a dry tripel than like a saison, or farmhouse ale (whatever that means.) Aspen white bubbles quickly inflate to the top of the glass, thousands of pearls and marbles forming a gaseous matrix that practically begs to be applied to my upper lip. A bright straw color glows from the glass, dense and foggy like an early London morning. The aroma features smells of bubblegum, banana and a nice springiness with a touch of mild herbs like parsley. In the flavor I parse out more of those subtly sweet tastes of bubble gum and banana, lifted by a highly carbonated, slightly sweet body, finished with a light, clean edge and and even cleaner finish. This is the apogee of Spring drinking, and best taken liberally on an early Spring afternoon with some lightly cooked seasonal vegetables.
