JB175 (1280), Holland, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 3, 2008 Blackish pour with a med-lg tannish head. Aroma is roasty with some dark chocolate. Flavor is chocolatey with some roasted coffee. A tad buttery. Not a bad dry stout, but this one always seems bland to me.
troopie (448), USA Jul 20, 2008 Bottle. Not much aroma here, though I let it warm. Poured deep black with a thick tan head. Full flavour of coffee, toast and malt. Lingering coffee and malt finish. Another good one from North Coast. dwaggs2 (26), Warrensburg, Missouri, USA Jul 18, 2008 Bottle. This beer is rich. Taste like a good stout should. Smells like coffee. Tastes like chocolate and coffee. Smooth beer that is very easy to drink. Is a nice beer to sip. Would get again, unclemike (260), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA Jul 12, 2008 Old 38 has the bitter, chocolate, coffee flavors of a great stout. Unfortunately the flavor is too mild, as if it was watered down slightly. To bad, it was almost a really nice beer FunkyBrewster (110), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 8, 2008 Pours a dark brown nearly black with a creamy beige head. Aroma is very chocolaty and coffee and pretty sweet/malty. Flavor is mildly bitter but still mostly roasted malts like chocolate and coffee and a bit of a nuttiness to it. Fairly dry on the finish as well. Medium bodied. Not a bad dry stout at all, and a good choice at the bar/store, but if there is something fuller in body with some more complex flavors, go for that instead. clong83 (142), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA Jun 29, 2008 Warm roasty flavor and aroma. Some hop bitterness and overall well-balanced. coffee tones are present. Not too heavy, but not thin either. Solid.
