COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Seems hard to believe that we’ve been making Old Rasputin for 10 years now, but that’s what’s happened. And, to celebrate the occasion, we’ve brewed a special small batch that’s been aged for 9 months in some 12 year-old bourbon barrels. It’s bottled in 500 ml bottles with a cork and wired finish and a special commemorative label ---- and it’s amazing. The depth, intensity and complexity of the flavor profile make it a worthy tribute to this fine beer.

This entry is for all anniversary Bourbon BA Old Rasputin releases.

Pours a dark brown with little head and lacing. Aroma of dark fruit and chocolate with oak from barrel. Taste of coffee grounds with hint of bourbon. Roasted malt mid palate and finishes with dark chocolate. Medium mouthfeel and medium bodied. High carbonation that I don't really like for the style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: APR 30, 2016 XVIII: pours black color, clear, with light brown/beige to brown creamy head. Visually low carbonation; Aroma; intense roasted dark malt aroma, with notes of coffee, cocoa powder, supported with bourbon note, vanilla, molasses, wood, tobacco, and rich hop aroma, which takes on dark fruits and pine. Similar is flavor, with rich, intense notes of roasted malts, which takes on coffe, cocoa powder, bitter sweet chocolate, vanilla, molasses, supported with bourbon note and hop flavors, which takes on pine and dark fruits. Everything is very well balanced: alcohol warmth is noticeable, but not overdone. Hop bitteness is also high, but still balanced with maltiness. Finish is slightly roasted, with note of bourbon and hint of hop fruitiness. Body is full texture is silky smooth, carbonation is low. Too overpriced.

This is a bottle several years old, from whatever vintage was 11.9 percent. The pour is quiet and still, with the finest of bubbles gathering a sheet of mocha foam over the black. The aroma is heated and forceful at first, with pomegranate molasses and milk chocolate treading faithfully against the rising pool of bourbon inflected sweetness; coconut, vanilla, burnt honey. With warmth and aeration, layers of concentrated coffee bean, leather, and roasted berries are revealed.

The taste initially leans with some frailty on the barrel sweetnesses. It is thereafter quickly apparent that the malt foundation has substantially eroded, as flavors of dry wood and old milk chocolate candy bars attest. It has a thinness, a papery, oxidative, hollow quality. Reliably, the wild, tannic, complex fruit notes of the aroma emerge to provide some intrigue later on. But ultimately, the barrel influence is overwhelming given how the overall structure has weakened.

The velvety palate envelops many of these issues to some degree. The finish is of wet wood, a port like sweetness of reduced figs. Because of its textural sensuality, the lacking, unbalanced or hotheaded tendencies elsewhere can’t define the final impression. Really, it’s hard to say when this beer’s ideal moment might have been. It was surely a bomb of overdone barrel aging when young, given that that influence is so intense even at this advanced age. So it’s hard to know if it ever might have had a peak moment when the malt foundation was whole and when the barrel influence had at least begun to settle. This is not that moment, but it is still appreciable.

Catch up rating from Saturday’s RS bottle share. Sample rated was XV. Smooth, silky, oily, just enough burn on top of this already exemplary stout. Nice sipper.

Hat was.

En meget mørk øl, kaffe eftersmag, lettere røget. Det er en meget harmonisk øl, og dermed lettere at drikke end fx limfjordporter.
