Seems hard to believe that we’ve been making Old Rasputin for 10 years now, but that’s what’s happened. And, to celebrate the occasion, we’ve brewed a special small batch that’s been aged for 9 months in some 12 year-old bourbon barrels. It’s bottled in 500 ml bottles with a cork and wired finish and a special commemorative label ---- and it’s amazing. The depth, intensity and complexity of the flavor profile make it a worthy tribute to this fine beer.

This entry is for all anniversary Bourbon BA Old Rasputin releases.

XV edition. 10 ounce sample on tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe (a couple weeks ago). The aroma is a bit roasted with plenty of bourbon, woodiness, and vanilla character. Some chocolate sweetness is also present. Really nice aroma, but it could be more aromatic. A little faint. Opaque black body with a creamy tan head and great lacing left behind. Starts a little sweet with some vanilla character, before more bourbon flavor comes through in the middle. Becomes a bit woody. Finishes dry with more hints of bourbon. Ethanol is hidden nicely. The body is a bit light, and this is a touch too dry for me.

Cervesa amb un aroma bastant alcoholic, en boca es nota més el gust a xocolata i un amargor torrat. Cerveza con un aroma bastante alcohólico, en boca se nota mas el sabor a chocolate y con un amargor tostado.

Pours dark brown, edging black. Aroma is sweet, heavy, sticky with all those dark fruity flavours and a bit of booze. Taste has a lot of sweetness, bourbon barrel coming through nicely, does not feel too heavy but rather nice, great for sipping. Some roast flavour complementing the sensation, vanilla. Great warming beer.

500ml bottle enjoyed @ home, XVII. Pours almost black with a beige head that leaves thick laces. Aroma is straight up bourbon, lots of it, tobacco, tar, chalk, lots of wood, roasted malt. Taste is boozy, salty and medium bitter. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Finish is boozy bourbon, it’s hard to drink it because of the alcohol bite.

Originally reviewed 5/29/2014. 500 mL bottle poured into a snifter. XV bottle. Black with an ample dark khaki head. A thin collar persists. Nothing else on the surface. Really boozy aroma. Singes the nostrils. Dark chocolate. Oak. Bourbon. Charred, intense oak. Tastes of sweet, dark chocolate. Bourbon and vanilla barrel character. It has a chalkiness that isn’t desirable but at the same time isn’t wholly unpleasant. Just is. Bitter oakiness in the back. Gives it a brief hint of acidity. Very creamy. Medium carbonation. Heavy and boozy, but to be expected. I remember really enjoying XIV, but I don’t remember this chalky oak. Maybe it was there and I didn’t notice it. Or perhaps vintage XV is just intensely oaky.

Bottle, thnx to bytemesis. Pours a pitch black beer with a big, brownish head on top. Aroma has massive bourbon notes, a big touch of vanilla, wood, some oak in there as well. Flavor is very sweet, American, strong, slightly boozy and bourbon. The balance is very nice, it lacks a bit of density. Still very nice and impressive.

Bottle ( XVI ) at home. Pours nearly black. Small , light head. I exected it to be more dark, but at least its not white.... it fades fast as well. Smell is roasty, bit bitter, some bourbon-inspired grainyness, but not really vanilla or sweetness...Taste is bitter up front , and than turns into a beautifull, complex and elegant. Some booze towards the back, but it’s not unpleasently strong. Just like the base though, this is the typical Imperial stout where there is nothing wrong , at any level, but its not rememorable, ’just’ a well brewed BA Imperial stout. I like it, but I would have prefered a thicker MF. and perhaps something to set it apart from all the other beers in this type that are on today’s market.
