COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Seems hard to believe that we’ve been making Old Rasputin for 10 years now, but that’s what’s happened. And, to celebrate the occasion, we’ve brewed a special small batch that’s been aged for 9 months in some 12 year-old bourbon barrels. It’s bottled in 500 ml bottles with a cork and wired finish and a special commemorative label ---- and it’s amazing. The depth, intensity and complexity of the flavor profile make it a worthy tribute to this fine beer.

This entry is for all anniversary Bourbon BA Old Rasputin releases.

XV edition. 10 ounce sample on tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe (a couple weeks ago). The aroma is a bit roasted with plenty of bourbon, woodiness, and vanilla character. Some chocolate sweetness is also present. Really nice aroma, but it could be more aromatic. A little faint. Opaque black body with a creamy tan head and great lacing left behind. Starts a little sweet with some vanilla character, before more bourbon flavor comes through in the middle. Becomes a bit woody. Finishes dry with more hints of bourbon. Ethanol is hidden nicely. The body is a bit light, and this is a touch too dry for me.

Bottle (500ml $22): black with brown head. Chocolate aroma with some bourbon. Taste is similar. Slightly oily. Very nice. Some warming in the end. I like this a lot, but the price is too much. Maybe special occasions.

XIV bottle in Nov. ’14 and I think XVII just came out. Deep black and oily with lightly translucent rim. Nose is savory burnt sugar and malts, light bourbon. Lots of dark chocolate and bakers cocoa, light bourbon, lightly bitter ash in flavors. Viscous mouthfeel, slightly hot finish.

Bottle: XI. Thanks, Jeff. Oily black, viscous pour with not much head, just a thin, khaki collar. Rich fudge aroma, mild chocolate cake, smooth woody bourbon, hints of vanilla, a light kiss of black cherry, & some burnt brown sugar notes. Still lots of bourbon & wood in the flavor after all these years. Dense fudge & dark chocolate character, mild brownie notes, vanillin, burnt brown sugar, & quite a bit of boozy heat in the finish. Woody notes of black licorice & bitter chocolate linger.

XVI bottle to glass three ways. Pour is deep dark brown with mild tan head. Aroma is fantastic - bourbon, brownie batter. Taste is strong roast character with a lingering vegetable extract quality. Mild soy sauce. Mild sweet bourbon finish. Lots of charred barrel. Think I prefer the base beer here!

I had started to tire of BA because ultimately many of the beers ended up tasting like bourbon. This one is a refreshing exception. Bourbon notes, but not overpowering. Well done.

The XV. On tap at Apex Bar in portland, Oregon. Colour...basic black with a thick tan head. Nose...sugar infused booze with notes of burnt marshmallow, brown sugar syrup and broiled dates. Palate...badda-boom-badda-bing of booze up front and then loads of dry, oaky tannins and booze coated chocolate, with dark chocolate ganache and massively dark, dried fruit. The finish has lots of ethanol burn!

XVI. Poured into a snifter. Black with khaki head. Spotty lacing. Aroma is bourbon, oak, vanilla, coffee, bitter chocolate and dark fruit. Just smells SMOOTH. All these flavors come through in the taste along with some more prominent raisin/plum. Mostly sweet, just a touch of bitterness. Nice creamy mouthfeel. Very nice beer.
