COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it—A sincere friend is not born instantly.

Wowsers! I am sure this is a good beer in terms of absolute standards (purety, ingredients, and whatever else...), so you can’t call it swill, especially at $10.00 for 4 of them. Aroma was promising. Heavy malt/coffee/chocolate with hints of peaches/pears. First taste was a surprise. I thought I had a shot of rum. It was only then I realized that the alcohol content was 9%. Taste was like rum and coffee to me, and much to the chagrin of some I am sure, and to me, I poured about half of it out. My suggestion is that you don’t buy this, but try it with someone who can walk you through what it is and what you should look for. Too much of a shock for me. The other 3 will go in the fridge to impress some unsuspecting goober (like me) at some point.

black black color with dark tan mostly lasting creamy head. Great chocolatey and smoky coffee aroma and flavor. Two work well together.

Pours a jet black with a small amount of tanish head. Aroma is roasty coffee and alcohol. Flavor is very roasty, coffeish, but it masks the alcohol nicely. Very smooth considering the ABV. Finish is nice and warming. Very good beer.

Wow, this is a huge and brutal stout. Gorgeous thick black pour with a dark tan head. Tastes like fruit, roasted malt, and coffee. Pretty high carbonation for the style. Alcohol is definitely noticable in the finish. A bit less subtle than, say, Victory Storm King (my favorite Imperial), but any fan of huge beers would do well to try this one.

dark opaque black pour, with a small tan head. coffee, anise, alcohol are detectable in the aroma. good roasty, coffee flavor, a little sweet, but a lasting roasty/bitter finish. pretty good thick mouthfeel, and the alcohol isnt terribly noticable. a good imperial, and probably the best bargain imperial stout i’ve had at 1.65 a 12 oz.

UPDATED: MAY 27, 2005 Great black oil pour with an aroma of too strong coffee underneath a dark tan head. Exceptionally complex. Notes of bitter chocolate, roasted coffee, caramel, a bit of hop bitterness followed by a good alcohol warming. This is a great beer. My only complaint, which is standard fare for most imperials, is that the higher alcohol thins out the texture more than I would like.

bottle. a very dark great looking pour with a smallish tan head. rich and full mouthfeel with strong coffee flavors. the coffee overpowers everything in this stout. I enjoyed it but its not one I could drink very often.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2006 Alcohol, chocolate, vanilla and coffee flavors in this thick but not too thick brew. Small head. Tasty. I like it. I like the 9% abv too. Will buy again.
