COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it—A sincere friend is not born instantly.

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2004 Man this brew is like sucking down a glass of Russian dirt. Woah! Very dark. black as night actually. Head is brown. Deep light brow. Head dies. What remains smells like really good rum. I mean, really good rum. Notes of chocolate, coffee, cinnamon, and the plague. I can hardly drink a whole one of these. It destroys me every time. In the mouth it feels like your are sucking on a coal miners fist. So thick.like sug juice. Hard to finish, t be relished after dinner.

Mondial de la Biere 2004. Very dark brown colour with glints of ruby and a frothy tan coloured head. Alcohol, merlot, dark bread and chocolate aroma. Vinous, chocolate, alcohol, coffee, and smoky flavours that blend together nicely. Full bodied and smooth, but without the richness I like in a stout. Actually preferred this to the Peche Mortel sampled immediately prior.

Yardstick Imperial Stout. Finger-wide brown head forms and fades quickly, leaving behind the business end of this brew. Smoky, chocolate, coffee aroma is a mere prelude to the masterful blend of astoudingly complex flavors. First sips bring chocolate, followed quickly by Vienna roast coffee beans, anise, peaty single-malt scotch, mysterious hops well balanced by perfect sweetness. Unlike many West Coast Imperial Stouts, this one is not overly hopped. Takes me immediately to a rainy day in the Highlands, or a late-night Seisun at a pub in Ireland (even though it is "Russian"). I would give this a perfect score except I am rating the bottled version, while I hear it is a revelation on tap, pushed by nitrogen. The complexity deepens as it warms. I disgaree with those who have said the palate is thin. Drink a bottle and understand the gesture of the man on the label.

Bottled Pours jet black, brown head forms & quickly dies leaving only a slight trace behind...well carbonated. Black liquorice, maybe even a touch of cherry dominate my nose...slight cobwebs are overtaken by burnt/roasty/smokey scent...good aromatics. Palate is lighter than expected, but still towards full, seems to feel bigger as the glass empties. Flavor is overridden by the finish, which screams liquorice and maybe a bit of peaty whisky lingering...dark sweet roasty, alcoholic flavor. Burnt alcohol as it goes over the sides of my tongue. Very nice RIS, not my favorite, but still complex and fun. Slightly thin, and the liquarice and burnt alcohol flavors I got detracted overall

UPDATED: MAY 12, 2007 Very thick meaty beer. It has a strong roasty flavor, definite chocolate and coffee tones, with a nice long lasting head. Very nice.

Black with blonde head. Roasty, salt and bitter and high acid. In sip: Cinammon, rye bread, bittersweet chocolate, fruit, licorice. Could be less hoppy. Medium texture.

UPDATED: JUL 6, 2009 2009-06-18. Pitch black body with a nice fluffy brown head. Rich aroma, cocoa and dark roast, dark malt, touch of alcohol. (8+) Flavour is fairly bitter, both hops and roast. Dark malty base with decent amounts of hops that linger long into the finish. Smooth average plus to medium bodied palate. Very nice. 8+/4/8/4/16-17 Bottle of unknown origin

June 2004. Black dark body, with a very nice beige head that eventually fades. Aroma is bitter chocolate. Flavour is roasty, with pleasantly warming alcohol that announces itself politely. Not the thickest mouthfeel but quite nice nonetheless. Very very good but did not meet my expectations. 7/5/8/4/16 Mondial 4T (Me).

16th beer of the 2004 Montreal Mondiale. Black, with tan head. Aroma is of coffee, chocolate, maybe some vanilla. The flavour nice and full, bitter with sweet maltiness, complemented by roasty coffee notes. A good one.

Dark brown beer. Coffee coffee coffee! Yes, it smells like coffee and it taste like it too. A lot of chocolate too and maybe some vanilla. Well hidden alcohol. A solid one of this style.
