COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it—A sincere friend is not born instantly.

Bring on the chilly fall/winter nights. Intensely roasted flavor, malty, with a nice appropriate alcohol nose and finish. Quite complex. Best imperial stout on the planet.

UPDATED: NOV 3, 2006 Light, slightly burnt chocolate smell. Dark brownish/red look and little to no head that evaporates quickly. Very obvious roasted malt with a lingering chocolate taste. Nice complexity. Smooth with a bit more carbonation then other Imps and slightly creamy. Very drinkable.

UPDATED: MAR 11, 2006 Bottle. Black fading to reddish brown at edges with very little head. Various Imp stout aromas: dark chocolate, roasted barley, burnt toast, licorice, dark fruits, molasses, and some dry stout sourness. Flavor is a bit more balanced than nose, mostly dark chocolate with burnt overtones and a nice bitterness in the finish. Body is a bit lighter than I expected from the alcohol content-- a creamier mouthfeel would do well with this beer. Drinks like a good chocolate stout, but I wish it had that oily, mouth-coating body of other Russian Imps. All this criticism aside, this is a fantastic beer! And what a perfect label. Mad Russians, oh my.... 3/8/06 Draft at Baja Bean, Staunton VA. Everything above, boosted to a 4.2 because of an exquisite creamy body and perfect carbonation, really playing up the luscious side of a fine, powerful brew.

UPDATED: SEP 13, 2009 This beer has been consumed both on tap and in the bottle. The beer pours a deep, rich dark color with a nice, full, thick tan head. Aromas are malts, coffee, a tinge of chocolate as it warms, and notes of hops lingering in the background. The flavor is loaded with coffee and notes of malts and toffee - with minor alcohol burn. My original review back on 9/10/2005 gave it a 3.7.

I think the thanks for this brew goes to Beeryum (though it may be from Santa). Either way, thanks! Very nice looking brew. Black and opaque but clear with a foamy brown head. Toasty malt aromas, and something else which I labeled as toffee (though I’m not sold on that description). Quite full…Good. Body is light but creamy and slick. The flavor is dominated by toasted malt at first but open to reveal milk chocolate and very well balanced hops. Possibly some graham crackers in there too. Not nearly as complex as I expected, but this was good. It’s not dessert like some Imps, it’s just good drinking.

UPDATED: OCT 9, 2005 Poors dark with a thin head. Smells like chocolate with a hint of cofee. Very flavorful. Chocolate. Coffee. Burnt and bitter but sweet at the same time.

This is a very dark beer, burnt brown in color. The head was very foamy and creamy and lasted a very long time. This beer is way too much for me! Way too bitter with a way too extreme flavor profile! Burnt caramel and burnt chocolate were the only flavors that I could identify with and there was a very tarish undertone, at least for me. I am not big on stout but I do enjoy a few, oatmeal stout for one. This beast is a loser in my book!

Opaque black with a large rocky dark tan head. Poured quickly to mix the nitrogen better. Dark roasted malt with an underlying hop bitterness. Dark chocolate, burnt coffee, and a syrupy character. Somewhat alcoholic in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium heavy and syrupy.

Cost $1.63/12 oz. bottle at Trader Joe’s. Bottle claims it is 9% alcohol by volume. Poured a dark brown, light brown head that didn’ last and very little lacing. Aroma has lots of roasted chicory (stronger than coffee) and some bitter hops. Mmmm. There is also a strong hint of alcohol in the aroma. Flavor is dominated by burnt chicory (my only real criticism of this beer), followed by some maltiness and black licorice. There is a real alcohol burn in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is full bodied (characteristic of a Russian Imperial Stout), syrupy, some carbonation, with a crisp, mouth-drying finish. I could drink this one all night!
