This beer looks great pouring into the glass, with it's dark chocolate color and rootbeer-float-like head. The taste has a great nutty kick with a really interesting bitter finish. The mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. This beer is a delight! By the way, the high alcohol content packs a punch of it's own!

Rich aroma of roasted chocolate with some flowery/citrus hop notes, dark, dense body, tan head, very pleasing flavor, burnt hop bitters rich with chocolate and cream, maybe some expresso shots, yowza, the Bell's fan is impressed.

Pours a thick, syrupy black. Great malt flavor with a slight bitterness on the finish. Can't taste the alcohol at all. One of the best!!

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: JUN 20, 2005 Pours as syrup, dark amber--slightly translucent under high intensity light. Tan, mostly diminishing head accompanied by moderate lacing. Nose is roasted malts and bittersweet fruit with an acidic sting. Very malty at the first touch of the tongue, followed by resin bodied roasted chocolate and fruit with even more intense acidic sting. The smokey sweet malts remain while bitter, slightly sweet hops are gradually introduced. The finish is burnt toast bitter. The finishing flavour remains on the palette for minutes. The palate is thick, yet complements the experience appropriately. Alcohol was never present even as it warmed. To sum it all up with one word: EXCEPTIONAL!

Pure malt aroma and pitch black appearence. A bit of fruitiness and roast througout with a malt bite in front and a chocolatey finish. Well worth the trip to Richmond.

This is one strong stout, the chocolate aroma and taste was wonderful. Only place I could find it on the shelf was Cost Plus.

UPDATED: SEP 29, 2007 This beer is black. Light tan, big head. Coates the glass with an attempt at lacing by a too-thick foam, but still laces. Itís beautiful. Odor is citrus hops(bitter grapefruit), light banana and earth tones, mmm... Ever heard of a black IPA? Malty-sweet coffee flavor with a very big citrusy hop flavor thatís bitter. Fair alcoholic flavor. Coffe//chocolate sweet and lightly alcoholic aftertaste. Lively carbonation and a fairly dry, but full body. Overall excellent: good palate, complex and delightful flavor, beatiful beer.
Itís really been over 3 years since I had one. Big fluffy head of tan color, leaving behind ridiculously thick rings of lace. The body is ebony. A yeasty aroma smacks of something sweet and dark that isnít ready to eat, contains molasses, chocolate, coffee, oats, and some caramel-alcohol notes. The smell is luxurious. Mouth is full with light, creamy carbonation and a slightly dry finish. Sweet! Molasses, brown sugar, coffee, a surprising citrus-hop wallop (orange and grapefruit), and the whole thing is permeated with a light, coying presence of alcohol--like the aroma of an english style barley-wine. The bitter finish is burnt coffee with chocolate malts and molasses mixed with brown sugar, later joined by a critrusy hop note. As it warms, the alcohol does step up in the aftertaste, emphasizing the hops, adding some pine, making my mouth water. Itís still quite the beer.
Changed flavor from 9 to 8; palate from 4 to 5.

UPDATED: SEP 5, 2006 Beautiful deep black pour with a small tan head. Rich chocolate and toasty flavor with a sweet alcohol taste thrown in. Bitter at the finish, but that is easily remedied by taking another sip. ABV more noticed as it warms, in a good way.

Had at home in a pint glass and it was super dark brown-to-black. medium dense cream head was dark tan. dramatically smooth and jumping with raisin, chocolate, and coffee. yes, bitter, but the way it should be. the second one was straight out of the bottle at the movies, so a little warmer and even more pleasant with dark chocolate trail mix!

Aroma is coffee, chocolate and seasoned wood. Appearance is black with medium head. Flavor is same as aroma with more coffee than chocolate. Alcohol content can be detected in the sip but is it not a deal breaker. Palate is semicleaned leaving bittness behind. Overall, good example of Imperial Stout.
