petermadsen (391), Vesterbronxxx, Denmark May 31, 2008 Hmm. Black and moderate in most ways, considering it’s an Imp. A bit more on the roasty side than the hoppy... admiralzork (1), USA does not count May 31, 2008 I had my first taste of this at the North Coast brewery itself (in Fort Bragg, CA), while passing through on vacation. Love that dark color. The moderate maltiness balances out the bitterness well. Kind of rough, like a new wine, but overall a great beer. I’m pleased to find that I can get it on tap not too far from here. ndubs360 (114), portland, Oregon, USA May 29, 2008 pours a pitch black with a brown bubbly head. tastes of smoke, molasses, chocolate, and alcohol. packs a punch. 502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA May 28, 2008 Updated: Jan 7, 200912 oz. bottle into a sniffer. Thick oily black pour with a big creamy hot chocolate colored head that leaves good looking lacing. Lots of milk chocolate with some molasses, smoke, creamy vanilla, and an alcoholic undertone on the nose. The aroma is very heavy and unbelievably delicious. The flavor is strong and delicious, but not as much so as aroma. It includes some of the same notes but tastes rough around the edges with alcohol and bitterness (which should smooth out with age); the most predominant flavor is overly bitter chocolate. Just like any other world class impy on the palate: thick and coating with little carbonation. I’m interested to see how the other three I am aging will turn out. Overall: tasty stuff.
[RE-RATE] after a year this guy is still kicking and just as good and even a bit smoother. I am lowing the rating from 4.2 to 4 just because Imperial stout does not hold the place in my heart that it once did. A good example of the style, but not my favorite style anymore. Jimsnaks (1), Topeka, Kansas, USA does not count May 28, 2008 Great all around beer. Very easy to drink for and imperial stout. Love the chocolate taste at the end. fidel (886), Livermore, California, USA May 25, 2008 Updated: Sep 18, 2008Very dark brown. Roasted malts coffee front end developes onto dark chocolate, and finishes dry coffee and a strong hoppy bite. tarjei (1741), Bryne, Norway May 25, 2008 12 fl oz. bottle. Almost black color, lovely tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, hoppy bitterness. Dry finish. Lovely. v64 (74), Austin, Texas, USA May 24, 2008 Delicious malt aroma, pours very dark, as expected. Quite bitter, smoky, and chocolatey. This is a strong one, quite amazing.
