4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Old Rasputin looks the part, plays the part and delivers intangibles to boot.Black French roast coffee with a thick two fingered brown sugar tint head. Plenty of lace along the glass as it drinks, excellent for an imperial stout.Nice blend of roasty near smoky malt, classic espresso rich tones of the style. Huge bittersweet chocolate in the malty body with nice touches of orange, mint and grapefruit hop character. Luscious medium full body, slightly warming with moderate carbonation. Rich chocolate character dark and bittersweet with with roasty ground dark coffee beans. Some vanilla bean and licorice. A nice touch of earthy and citrusy hops fills the mid palate.Warming alcohol in the finish. Well balanced fermentation, leads to a quintessential Russian imperial stout. In a beer world rife with extreme indulgence of ingredients and absurd drives to be aggressively hopped alcohol monsters with funny names, Old Rasputin rests as a classic you should always be thinking of, especially when thinking RIS.

4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Served in snifter. Pours totally black with great beige head, astonishing retention. Aroma is fantastic, lots of cocoa, dark malts, coffee, a hint of vanilla, caramel. Taste is very intense from the very beginning, very dry, lots of dark malts and bitter chocolate, some coffee beans, a little bit warmy, but not alcoholic at all. Its very reputable beer, not for a reason, delicious RIS, worth every penny.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Roasted malty full flavored imperial stout with a hoppy balance. Not sweet. Almost has a light body for a Russian imperial. More hoppy than some. Nice and a solid stout but not as good as it is rated.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Very brown/black with beautiful thick brown head. Aroma of blueberries I think and a distant burnt toast aroma. The beer goes down smooth. A really nice palate. The taste is quite nicely balanced but rather sweet cholatety which I am not a great fan of.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
The truly undisputed and highly reputed Russian imperial stout. North Coast is one of my top 10 favorite breweries all time almost exclusively because of Rasputin.
Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass, the head produced was a monstrous 3 fingers of dark tan, dense Whipped cream. Pillowy and inviting like a craft milkshake almost. Truly gorgeous in the glass with a oily black color. The aromas are inviting with rich cocoa, caramel, dark dried fruits and licorice. The flavor is more of the same elements in the aroma with and added depth of coffee beans lending toward a comforting dry finish with a slight alcohol warmth in the belly.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Aroma of chocolate with big amount of dried fruits plus some roastiness. In taste medium sweet with chocolate and fruits. Medium to full body, could be more oily, feels a bit thin for ris, soft carbonation, bitter and alcoholic finish. OK, but could be more complex.

Nose is some roast, dried fruits like plums. Dark black pour, low head. Taste is dark roast, plum, maybe fig. Some warming alcohol. Smooth mouthfeel, slightly bitter. Good, but not as good as I remember.
