Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it—A sincere friend is not born instantly.

Maybe the best stout in my town, dark head, malty, strong coffe and chocolate flavors, need another one

Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Aroma is metallic with a hint of dark roast. Appearance is jet black with a nice two finger off white head that sticks around. Taste is typical to an RIS with heavy roastiness. A little too bitter on the back end for my tastes. Definitely a slick creaminess on the palate.

Dark pitch opaque black with not even any sense of transparency. Very sparse spots of foam. The nose shows a big mix of old coffee, soy sauce, moss, and a lot of old/aged aromas. (It’s a fresh bottle so somewhat strange) The palate is medium bodied, gentle carbonation and a lot of weight. Coffee notes with a slight coffee tartness and bitterness at the finish. Distinct steel tank notes are also present throughout the beer. The bitterness also has some burnt notes that aren’t entirely pleasant but slight enough not to cause issues. Notes of red bean also appear at the finish but the beer is completely bone dry and no residual sweetness shows. This one is a gentle sipper but the 9% definitely shows in its entirety.

Smell is hops and peppermint, oddly enough. Taste is way too hoppy. Some malt in there, but the hops overpower everything. Medium body, mediun carbonation, and some foam.

Pours black with a nice frothy brown head. Head retention is great. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, caramel, smoke, vanilla, caramel and slight alcohol. Bold flavors of chocolate, smoke, vanilla, caramel, slight hop bitterness, raisins and a bourbon alcohol feel. Amazing complex flavors, great taste and feel in the mouth.

Bottle from Hannaford Exeter Supermarket. Aroma is roasted chocolatey yeastiness. Appearance is opaque black with massive light brown head with decent retention and foamy lacing. Taste is boldly moderately bitter with sweet balance. Like aroma but with hint of coffee. Palate is creamy full bodied with enough carbonation to keep it from feeling like syrup but it is not really noticeable. Finish is long and bitter like chocolate covered espresso beans. Overall, this beer is pretty much as good as advertised. Aroma and taste could be a little more complex but are such rich versions of themselves that it is hard to find fault.

UPDATED: APR 29, 2015 Fell in love with this wonder of beer. Is not the traditional russian imperial stout, sweet and thick. His sweetness and oily texture is mixed with a long lasting super bitter of a ipa. One who loves imperial stouts and ipas will marry him.

Almost black colour, very nice mocca head. Aroma of cocoa, lactose, coffee, cinnemon. Taste is light to medium sweet, light bitter, very well balanced. Medium body, oily to creamy texture, soft carbonation. its very nice, only the aftertaste has a slight iron/blood kinda flavour, but its still very nice to drink
