UPDATED: APR 27, 2013 Bottle poured into snifter. Pours black with a finger khaki head that lingers, and sticky cobweb lacing that clings to the class. Smells of malts, molasses char and a hint of coffee. Taste is char up front, ash, and rich roasted malts. There is a subtle touch of sweetness but mostly all char and malt as with any big imp stout. This is one of my favorite beers. The palate is not as exquisite as other offerings, but the quality is always top notch.

$10 four pack of 12 ounce bottles. Black brew with a nice thick tan head that hangs on for a long time. Aroma is dominated by the chocolate malts. Taste is chocolate, roasted, some fruitish sweetness, and then there is this very bitter pinish aftertaste. Really good stout even though the aftertaste wasnít really needed. Overall it lost points due to cost. Yes some top notch brewing went into this one but there are stouts out there just as good for less cost and you get a whole six pack.

Very, very good beer! Dark, great head and nicely malted. I taste pine nuts and Bavarian dark bread. I love it. I don't get a great aroma from it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle bought in S.Francisco. Finally! This is a classic! Dark color. Thin to medium brown head. Body is medium and surprisingly smooth and fizzy. Medium bitterness, very light sweetness. Aroma is chocolate, roasted, liquorice, hoppy, high fruit.

Shocked by the quality of this beer. Bold taste without being too bitter. No oily residue like many imperial stouts.

Been one of my favorites for years. Big, black, bitter, and beautiful. Heavy tastes and smells of chocolate and coffee, as youíd expect from any stout. Well-executed and hides the alcohol well, but has a fairly bitter aftertaste that not everyone will enjoy. Try it over vanilla ice cream on a hit day...it sounds weird but trust me its delicious!

Draft Nitro: Poured Black with a long lasting fluffy tan head. Aroma molasses roasted barley. Taste Sweet malty molasses with a bitterness of the roasted barley. The heat from the abv was hidden.

Poured from a 12 oz into a tulip on 01.19.15. A: Cocoa, chocolate, and dark fruit. Itís a chocolate bomb. A: 3 finger very fluffy tan head with an easy pour and had to stop mid-bottle. Needless to say, the head is retained very well. Midnight black body with no red in the glass. T: Cocoa and a coffee sting of bitterness are dominant. Coffee grounds, roastiness, raisin, and fig are subtle. P: Creamy smooth, and crisp from bubbles on the back end. It leans toward medium chewiness. O: Like Narwhal, I didnít like this one when I had it last year. Palates can change, though. There is a slight sting on the back end that lingers, but itís tolerable.

This has been one of my favorites for 5-6 years, always from a bottle and poured. It ís been available year around in Illinois for the last 18 months or so. There are no surprises here. This beer is black, thick and frothy, with a ton of flavor. Coffee, molasses, cocoa, barley, it has it all and it kicks butt too. Today I had it on tap at Mackeyís Hideout. Everything Iíve always enjoyed about this beer was just a whole lot better. Itís not the perfect beer for all occasions, but itís damn close.

A really solid Russian Imperial Stout but somehow the version by Courage has a tastier blend.
