Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it—A sincere friend is not born instantly.

UPDATED: APR 27, 2013 Bottle poured into snifter. Pours black with a finger khaki head that lingers, and sticky cobweb lacing that clings to the class. Smells of malts, molasses char and a hint of coffee. Taste is char up front, ash, and rich roasted malts. There is a subtle touch of sweetness but mostly all char and malt as with any big imp stout. This is one of my favorite beers. The palate is not as exquisite as other offerings, but the quality is always top notch.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a stemmed glass. The color is a completely opaque black with two fingers of brown head and some nice thick lacing. The smell is pretty sweet for an Imperial Stout. Has some hints of raisins and grapes. It also has a bit of a sugary flavor as well. The taste is pretty malty with a sweet chocolate and toffee flavor. Some nice bitter coffee flavor mixed in as well which makes for a very satisfying The first sip was so good it was almost overwhelming. It is packed with so much malts and yet a nice pack of hop and coffee bitterness. There are chocolates, toffees, molasses, and some alcohol. The feel of this beer is pretty light for a heavy dark beer. A good drinking beer that goes down really well.

Dark brown color, very little tan head. Aroma is somehow creamy, with a real chocolate aroma. Initial and mid palette are fairly crisp with a pronounced chocolate taste on the finish. A fairly oily texture, especially on the finish. Nice bit of dried fruits. Some tobacco. Very interesting in that I am struck heavily by what is not as pronounced in some other top imperial stouts. For a 9% ABV beer the alcohol sweetness is not all that noticeable - a good thing. The deep roasted flavors and coffee flavors are also not as pronounced as some. This is a very good beer. Had some with more complexity, but not very many.

Bottle to shaker glass. Pours black, two finger tan head, moderate lacing, great retention. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate. Taste is mostly bitter, with sweetness in the background. Full bodied, medium carbonation, creamy mouth feel. Finishes bittersweet with note of licorice, dark chocolate, coffee, smoke and alcohol. An extremely complex and tasty stout.

ON NITRO - a little less bold than the bottle version. Taste amazing, silky coffee with a substantial bitterness. A favorite of mine.
