Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it—A sincere friend is not born instantly.

Served in a Westmalle chalice for no other reason that I need to break in the glass.

Rich roasted malt & coffee nose with everything an Imperial Stout requires. Pours a clear but nearly opaque ultra-dark brown color with a 1 finger creamy tan head that has moderate staying power. Lacing and head retention could be a touch better. The mouthfeel is creamy and robust. The flavor, a clear ’10’, is the high point of this beer. It leads with a crisp bitter bite on the front end, then a touch of sweetness, followed by a rich roastiness that persists through a delicious and wonderfully long finish. The only hint of the alcohol is a just touch of hotness combined with roasted malt acidity in my throat.

Since I’m getting more depressed by the minute that I didn’t buy more when I had the chance, I’ll bump the overall rating up a notch.

Rerating after a rich stew dinner (same day) - Espresso notes are more clear in flavor and aroma. Flavor and bitterness just ’pop’ from the beer and the staying power of the finish is just astonishing. Bumping overall up 2 to to 19 as I am loving the second half of this beer even more tha tthe first half!!

Great beer with pizza. The head is super thick, it’s like a thing in itself, I took a bite out of it. I taste caramel and chocolate with a great aftertaste of hops; 70 IBUs if I’m remembering correctly, bravo! It’s brewed in tradition of English brewers who supplied the Russian court of Catherine the Great. Whoever that is, it makes you feel like Catherine the Great. Old Rasputin is my segway into being a connoisseur of stouts. Definitely could become one of my usual beers. It was highly recommended to me and I highly recommend it as well.

Cerveja potente, intensa, aveludada, excelente cerveja.

355ml. bottle enjoyed @ home. Pours black with a one finger tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, caramel, dark chocolate, coffee and dark fruits. Flavour is malty sweetness and bitter roast. Medium to full bodied, oily texture, average carbonation. Finish is roasted and bitter.

Pitch black, moderate to weak dark tan creamy head, nice lacing. Aroma is some caramel malt, chocolate, strong roasted malts, bit licorice and some alcohol also. Taste is moderate sweet malt, caramel, chocolate, dark chocolate, strong roasted notes, bit coffee, quite bitter roasted character and a very dry bitter finish, hint of alcohol. Lasting bitter aftertaste. Full- bodied, moderate carbonation, creamy.

My reasons for first buying this are 1. North coast produces Brother Thelonious that I really lke which made me think that 2. They rpduced good Imperial Stout which they do. Malty, sweet, chocolaty and yummy. Not very technical but fitting
