Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it—A sincere friend is not born instantly.

Served in a Westmalle chalice for no other reason that I need to break in the glass.

Rich roasted malt & coffee nose with everything an Imperial Stout requires. Pours a clear but nearly opaque ultra-dark brown color with a 1 finger creamy tan head that has moderate staying power. Lacing and head retention could be a touch better. The mouthfeel is creamy and robust. The flavor, a clear ’10’, is the high point of this beer. It leads with a crisp bitter bite on the front end, then a touch of sweetness, followed by a rich roastiness that persists through a delicious and wonderfully long finish. The only hint of the alcohol is a just touch of hotness combined with roasted malt acidity in my throat.

Since I’m getting more depressed by the minute that I didn’t buy more when I had the chance, I’ll bump the overall rating up a notch.

Rerating after a rich stew dinner (same day) - Espresso notes are more clear in flavor and aroma. Flavor and bitterness just ’pop’ from the beer and the staying power of the finish is just astonishing. Bumping overall up 2 to to 19 as I am loving the second half of this beer even more tha tthe first half!!

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2015 (330ml) In a snifter Grate to purchase this in the UK for the first time . Roast coffee ,bitter chocolate nose. Dark intense base with a beige foamy head that coats the glass like a khaki sand trail . Smooth and creamy coffee and dark chocolate , rich and bitter roast interaction . I will re-pete .

bottle 355 ml, pours dark brown wth shny reddish reflexes what is a sign that it’s quite clear. The brownish colored head is very pillowy and stable. Aroma is mainly chocolatte and coffee witht some additional wood, caramel, soy sauce, roasted grain and a touch of dried fruits. Aroma is quite complex but it’s not very intensive. Medium bodied, I wish it would be a bit heavier. n taste medium sweetness with a lot of roasty bitterness that is quite intensive for the style. Finish is a bit ashy what dsturbs a bit the comfort of drinking.

Bottle shared. Black with big creamy beige head. Lots of dark chocolate, roasted grains, English hops, light creamy and yeasty with a touch of old wood and dead leaves. Roasted bitterness with almost medium sweetness. Over medium bodied with creamy carbonation and light alcoholic finish. Very nice.

WYGLĄD: Barwa czarna, nieprzejrzyste. Piana drobna, bardzo wysoka, trwała. Pięknie zdobi szkło.
AROMAT: Intensywny. Klasyczny RIS-owo aromat. Zboża, nuty beczkowe, żywica, zioła, kakao, kawa, nuty owocowe, waniliowe, alkohol. Dobrze zbalansowane.
SMAK: Likierowe.

Ładny, słodki aromat - czekolada, karmel, wanilia, suszonych owoców trochę i trochę kawy z mlekiem.

#800 USA beer. 355 ml. bottle. BBF 05/16. That saying in Russian on the label… lol (combined with the image of Rasputin). Wonder if that is an actual saying by Rasputin or what? Black, small darker mocha head. Nose is soy sauce & chocolate, chocolate malts & umami, mix of sugary + chocolate sweetness with a strong umami / savory component. About equal balance. Chocolate wins a bit in the taste, sweet cheap chocolate, malty, brown sugar, lots of cheap chocolate syrup, light roast towards the finish with some roasted coffee, finish carries some of the soy sauce promised in the smell. Body is chocolate syrup & quite easy to drink. Very good as a basic offering at a good price this would work amazingly. This is very nice work for a beer made in what I can tell are very large quantities. The drinkability of this one makes it all the better for me. Very nice work – prefer it slightly over the BA version. Great work. Simple but heavily satisfactory & fun to drink.

Aromat to w pierwszej chwili mocny chmiel i zielone, trawiaste zapachy. Później pojawia się gorzka czekolada i nuty palone. A po ogrzaniu niuanse alkoholowe. W smaku piwo jest wytrawne i dość "lekkie" jak na ris-a. Pojawia się słodka czekolada, nuty kawowe i palone. Finisz to średnia chmielowa goryczka i szlachetny alkohol. Smaczny klasyczny przedstawiciel stylu.

[2015-09-01, St. Michaels, Oulu] Pikimusta. Samea, vaaleanruskea vaahto. Paahteisen maltainen tuoksu, jossa suklaata ja kaakaota. Maussa katkeraa paahteisuutta. Täyteläinen runko.
