Commercial Description:
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

12 ounce bottle from the 2006 batch. I was very excited for this three year old barley wine and was very pleased with it. It poured a dark amber color with a half finger width white head that disappeared quickly. The aroma consisted of a LOT of booze with some hops, malt, caramel, and a bit of dark fruit. The taste was very strong at the beginning and then rounded out well at the end. I was blown away on my first sip with the amount of alcohol character that it had. As it warmed I started to taste some light, pleasant hops, caramel malt, and maybe some toffee. This was a very "thick" and boozy beer. Overall very good... I would have rated it higher if the alcohol was hidden a bit better though.

2008. Pours dark amber, minimal white head. Malty aroma, caramel. Taste is malty, caramel, raisin. I didn’t find the malt well balanced with the hops. I wasn’t impressed at all, didn’t find it nearly as complex as ratings would indicate, maybe a bad batch or needed more cellering time.

2006 vintage 13.25% with great thanks to HogTownHarry. Appearance: Murky brown with a medium off white head. Aroma: Rather boozy, hops, malt, wood, vanilla, caramel, dark fruit, somewhat brandy aroma too. Lovely. Flavour: Wow, creamy yet alcoholic, toffee and malt, serious malt, lots of hops and smoke, peat, bitterness and lots of deep dark fruit, pine & brandy with a long malt-alcohol finish. Wow, so much going on.

Poured amber with white head. Aroma of caramel and butterscotch. Sweet and heavy. Man up and do a balck and tan of this and old rasputin. Hells yeah.

2008-Wow, this is really smooth, but still has lots of flavor. Beautiful redish color. he taste is as complex as it’s nose. With very little hop bitterness, this one is very smooth and warm. It’s sweetness is well balanced by it’s enormous malt, dried fruit and alcohol taste.

2006 Bottle courtesy of HogtownHarry- Deep mahogany pour, with a half inch beige froth. Nose of prunes and wood, brown sugar, a bit of alcohol, some spices, lots of hops, deep rooted nuances of gold rum. Big brown sugar and caramel malts are upfront in the mouth, a bit of smoked wood, sherry, some prune, floral hops, again with the gold rum, quite spicy. In terms of palate, this barley wine ale is among the the best I’ve had. This version is 13.25%, quite heady and hefty, but you’d never know because it is so balanced, mellow and drinkable. This is one world class BW. Very well done. Thanks a lot for this Harry!

2008 Vintage bottle. Pours a dark brown/orange with a thin off white head. Aroma is toffee, caramel, a little dark fruit and some vinous qualities. Flavor was dark and sweet. Loads of malt sweetness, a lot of caramel, toffee, plums. Nice barley wine. Alcohol was well masked.

A very nice brew. Pours dark brown with little to no head. Definitely a pretty malty beverage, full of barley. A really crisp brew that goes down quite smooth with a bit of a kick at the end but its nice and fruity. A great brew.
