Commercial Description:
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

pre-2006 ABV: 11.4%.
2006 vintages: 11.6% & 13.25%.
2007 vintage: 11.7%.
2008 vintage: 12.5%.

2008 Bottle. Dark ruddy red color with a thin soft light tan cover. Big raisin, brown sugar, syrup, caramel, toffee, and slight sherry and alcohol aroma. Taste is a bit of sherry up front, vinuous, raisins, malty, and alcohol.

2008 bottle pours deep reddish-brown with a nice frothy head. Smells of caramel, toffee, raisins, bourbon, and a little alcohol. Feels syrupy and a little creamy on the mouth. Taste is a little muddled--losts of malt, a little nutty and strangely a faint coffee taste. It’s boozy, as it warms down the throat and into the stomach. Definitely a sipper, and I’m looking forward to laying this down for several years.

I really liked this beer although might be biased because I grew up in Fort Bragg! Deep amber body, oak flavors, very smooth and drinkable.

Bottle. 2008 vintage. Big fruity aroma, with sweet malt. Deep reddish brown body, almost no head. Flavor is sweet, moderately spicy, caramel and fruit, with warming alcohol. Smooth finish.

2008 bottle. Pours a rich coppery brown with very light carbonation - not quite enough of a head to cover the top of the beer, though the edge of the head clings to the glass a little. Aroma of a lot of malt, with some fruit and caramel apple. Flavor is again a lot of sweet malt, little to no hops, and a hint of alcohol in the finish. Full bodied but not overly thick. You just know this one will age well. Would love to try an older version.

Reviewed 2/7/2009 (2008 bottle): Pours a pretty clear brown reddish colored body, with small off-white head, diminishing quickly. Fruity, strawberry, aroma, some fizziness. Some malty nuttiness too. Not much hops or bitterness, just maltiness. Sweet taste, syrupy. Thick mouthfeel, some lightish carbonation. Very sweet fruity tasting, strawberry seeds, slight acidic and bitterness. Very strong taste, a slight hotness, but almost completely covered by the malts. Dark fruitiness, red grape, maybe plum. Better with food.
