Cloudy, murky deep amber color with smallish, thin head. Caramel aroma that makes me want to bite into this. Taste is sweet, sticky, malty with a nice hop bite. This is a fantastic beer! A bit sweet to have more than one, but just great.

Damn, I gotta check the info on bottles before I drink them. I wanted to do several reviews tonight but I had no idea how potent this was going to be.
And blast Matt at Liquid Solutions for not filling me in on that info! Yeah, that's it, it's his fault! But I do need to thank him for turning me onto it, though. Quite tasty, it is.
Pours a brown color with a red tint and a nice head but no lacing.
Smells very impressive. There's a sweetness there that isn't just malt. Serious fruit presence as well.
Taste is overshadowed by the alcohol. Toasted fruits and malt sweetness predominate with virtually no hop presence. The flavor is good but it could be better.
Mouthfeel is of alcohol. Other than that it's typical for style; not overly full and not a lot of carbonation. Drinkability suffers from the unbalanced taste and the high alcohole content.
This is worth seeking out to try it. I wish I would have grabbed a couple more to store and see what it'll be in a year or so.

Cherry, sweet aroma. Honey aftertaste. It seems like it can't make up its mind whether or not it wants to be a christmas ale, or a stout.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
2002 Vintage: Hazy ruby orange hue. Brandy-armagnac-cognac, dried apricot nose. Small but sticky beige head. Sweet chewy caramel malts, dried cranberry, apricot, plum, cherry, woody, honey, pleasantly medium bodied, finishing with a long acidic, subdued hops, bitter finish. Very nicely done. This has definately opened up and gotten better with age. Ill keep the other '02's for years to come. I feel this is NC's best offering.

UPDATED: JAN 27, 2005 Re-Rated- Actually a good Barleywine, whenI first rated this beer, I couldn’t appreciated it. Nice and smooth, nice mouthfeel and caramel taste. Alcohol is smooth.
I really did not care for this, really tasted like beer with Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. Alcohol was not covered well, and was present til the last drop.

2003 - Perhaps I had a bad Bottle, but this beer reaked and tasted of Alcohol. The color was a cherry red. A slight hoppy taste. But, everything was overpowered by the alcohol.

2001 - thanks to argo0. Nice sweet, malty aroma. Deep, cloudy brown color, but not much head. Very rich beer, complex flavors, malts, vanilla, fruits, and less of an alcohol flavor than you'd expect given the abv. Aftertaste has a hint of bitterness from some mighty fine hops. To put it simply, yum.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Wonderful. Lovely deep amber color with a nice creamy tightly bubbled tan head. Aroma of malt, fruit, licorice - mildly of burnt sugar and a little roastiness. Rasputin lurking below the surface, but kept at bay. Taste is deep and rich. Smell is pretty malty, but taste is more balanced. Slightly drying, hop finish. Can taste that gravity a bit. Totally digging this brew - should be a staple in everyone's cellar.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAY 31, 2006 ’06 update. Super strong alcohol flavor, lots of over ripe fruit and some mild hop and spice. This would be great to age, a little rough right now though.
’04 Creamy vanilla, hops, sour apple, pine, sweet alcohol burn at the end. This is a good one, if not a little scary!
