Commercial Description:
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

pre-2006 ABV: 11.4%.
2006 vintages: 11.6% & 13.25%.
2007 vintage: 11.7%.

2006 vintage 11.6abv. Strong malt aroma with a little softwood fragrances. Cloudy dark brown color with a medium dark tan head. Light bitter and moderate malts in the beginning with the finish getting sweet then mild alcohol burn in the very end that lasts.

Vintage 2006 bottle (11.6%) pours thick hazy amber with a quickly dissipating tan head. Sweet aromas of caramel, butterscotch, malts, and raisins. Smooth palate consisting of sweet malts, caramel, and bourbon/scotch. Great easy to drink barley wine character.

Bottle courtesty of mar. Pours hazy amber, with little to no head. Aroma of vanilla, sweet malts, raisins and caramael. Strong flavor... much like bourbon barrel but less bourbon. Full bodied. really good sipping beer.

2008 12 oz. poured into a sniffer. Rich ruby red pour with a big, very light tan/egg-white colored head that holds pretty well. The aroma was not unbelievably complex but was potent and unbelievably delicious - sweet doughy malt with citrus and resinous hops and some port booze. Not as much alcohol in the flavor as the abv. might suggest; it tastes heavy and full and complex with strong doughy malty forefront and a juicy citrus hop background. This might be the perfect balance of hops and malt for a barley wine. Rich and coating on the palate with a warm alcoholic finish, soft carbonation, and a medium to heavy body. Overall: good, complex, and fresh. But, I couldn’t drink more than one in a night because it is so big and full.

12oz bottle(2nd version of 2006 Vintage ABV 11.6%)(courtesy I believe from mreusch)-A nice amber colored body with a tan head that dissipates very quickly into nothing and an aroma of caramel, yeast, malt, and raisins. Taste of malt, caramel, and alcohol. This full bodied brew is very well blended and hides the alcohol very well. Great Barley Wine. 12oz bottle 10/6/09 (’05 Vintage-Courtesy of after4ever)-Pours a dark amber body with a huge tan head. Aroma of dried fruit, malt, sweetness, and alcohol. Taste of the same with some fruit and molasses coming through. This full bodied brew is very well balanced and is quite tasty. Same score 8/3/8/3/17

Thick healthy pour with no head. Amber colored. Very sweet to the nose with molasses and raisins. Taste is sweet malt with caramel, dark fruits and some nuttyness. Would have been great in a large snifter in front of a blazing fireplace.

Red-tinged amber color with head hanging around. Malt burst, some alcohol warmth in aroma and flavor, cardboard tinge. Nice fruitiness, but reserved, not quite the complexity one might expect or want. Austere malt and fruit flavors leave one unsuspecting to the potency of this brew. After reading reviews, I did pick up on the almond notes in flavor and aroma--a nice amaretto melding. This was a 2008 label so I expect a future tasting would likely yield a better rating.

2007 bottle at home with renffisch, 25th June 2008. Deep orangey red with a dried apricot aroma. Tastes even better than it smells, with apricot and pineapple flavours at first and then almond, grapes and warming alcohol coming through. Very smooth, not too clunky and extremely enjoyable.
