2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle int a pint glass.
Pours a hazy dark brown with just a tiny wispy head. Not really any lacing but there is a thin ring around the edge of the glass.
Aroma is quite sweet with caramel, toffee, and figs. There is a slight sherry/oxidized note about it as well.
Taste is extremely sweet right off the bat. Caramel is huge and just seems to overwhelm any other flavors that might be present. I can also tell this one has oxidized over time. Sherry flavors are present and there is a bit of a port like quality. Sweet throughout with a very sticky, almost cloying, finish.
Overall, I was really hoping this would be an awesome experience with this beer having so much age but it is just too sweet. A bit one dimensional as well. I may need to seek out a fresh example sometime.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Appearance: The body is a mildly murky amber to garnet with a dense light tan head. The head quickly forms a dense coating.
Aroma: The aroma leans a little fruity with hints of oak, odd since it’ snot oak aged. Earthy tones poke through the fruitiness along with a dash of caramel. The aroma smells okay, but isn’t very aromatic.
Taste: The flavor is big and malty with subtle fruity esters. Big brown sugar and molasses along with caramel make a big malt base with a slight spiciness overlying with fig. Big and easy to drink, this only hints at alcohol on the finish.
Palate: Full-bodied, near thick, with light carbonation.
Overall: Despite my rating, I have a lot of respect for this beer. It’s one of the few beers I’d ever want to age a bunch of while still tasting good fresh. This could certainly use a few months in the cellar, but it drinks nicely now.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAR 7, 2014 Bottle, 2013 vintage, cellared about 1 year. Rich dark fruit aroma with a little bit of booze. Pours copper colored with a thin light brown head and some lacing. Sweet dark fruit flavors as well as some caramel malt to start. Finishes smooth with just a bit of booziness. Very good, probably even better if aged longer.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
2013 bottle from Save On. Garnet red/amber with ring and full of micro floaties. I didn’t expect to have to decant it. Vinous woody hop and caramel aroma. Toasted caramel ripe cherry brandy sweetness just short of syrupy with woody hop bitterness bordering on astringency. Medium full body. Not my favorite barleywine or North Coast beer. Just not my style I guess.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Backlog from the 2011 vintage. Bottle bought at Systembolaget. I have a hard time with barley wines in general this one was decent though. High in sweetness and alcohol, lots of raisins and dried fruits, probably should have aged it for a couple of years.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20
2013 bottle from Tipples. Pours dark amber red colored with a one finger yellowish tannish head. Aroma of sweet dark fruits, leather, caramel, some aroma that gives this a lager like smell. Flavor follows with sweet fruits, plums, a bit of caramel, and a sweet finish that reminds me of a bock. This is interesting and doesn’t scream barleywine or old ale to me. Medium heavy mouthfeel with medium low carbonation. Some alcohol warmth going down that makes this a nice winter warmer. Not what I expected after trying the Cellar Reserve version.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2011 vintage drank in 2012. 12oz bottle served in a snifter glass. Very good barley wine, probably would have been ever better with another year on it.

Flaska från SB. Rubinröd vötska med gulvitt skum. Intensiva dofter av dadlar, russin och citrus. Komplex och djup. Hög sötma i smaken och kraftig beska. Rejält eldig munkänsla. 11,2% alkohol lämnar sina avtryck. Lång eftersmak.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013 bottle. Pours a murky brown with little head. Very carbonated at first and taste if raisins, dark fruit and hoppy bitterness to finish. Needs some time but after tasting prior aged vintages it will stand up.

3.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Beautiful Reddish brown color with a little head. Nice cherry arroma. Tastes very very sweet. Like decadent sweet fruits or a fine wine. Maybe just a little too sweet for my taste. Deap alcohol burn on the finish. This beer makes a great lead in as it prepares your Palate for your favorite Belgian Quad.
