Commercial Description:
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

pre-2006 ABV: 11.4%.
2006 vintages: 11.6% & 13.25%.
2007 vintage: 11.7%.
2008 vintage: 12.5%.

Ages great! Had off tap and bottle. Aged bottles come out very thick and malty, almost syrup-like. Off tap it seem smoother and less malty. Pours dark. Make sure not to drink this one too cold or any barley wines for that matter. Complex flavors and high quality make this a great beer!

07 bottle. Poured a reddish brown, with a very thin head, that did not last. Had a strong alcohol smell, with some sweetness, but the alcohol did not come through in the taste. Maybe a bit too sweet, at least for me, but might have been too young for drinking.

I tried this after a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot barleywine. The difference is profound and not in a good way for the North Coast ale. This is brewed more according to British style with traditional Brit hops and they don’t play a major role in aroma or flavor. Also, like many others have said, the alcohol is definitely evdient in this brew. This would be a last resort for me as a barleywine.

(bottle) Pours deep amber with a tan head that lasts. Aroma is very sweet with brown sugar, molasses, and raisin. There are also some hops in the aroma. The taste is very sweet with raisin and molasses again leading to a nice bitter finish with light alcohol showing up. The mouthfeel was full and chewy, not too bad.

The high alcohol content is very evident with this beer. very little was done to incorporate other subtle tastes with the alcohol. It is very in your face and not really my thing.

No, this beer is not nearly as impressive as many reviewers are claiming! It’s not ever the best offering by North Coast as Pranqster is a better more palatable beer. But, naturally far too much praise will be hoisted upon this mess. It does NOTHING to hide it high alcohol note.

2007 12oz bottle. Whoa taste like i just had a glass of whiskey straight up. Not quite my cup of tea. Very malty and you can really taste the alcohol in this one.

07 Bottle pours a dark amber color. Head retention is medium and has good lacing. Smells like a sweet dessert that I can’t wait to dive in to. Taste is starting to mellow and has some belgian style finish. I need to pick up more of this beer to age even more.
