Commercial Description:
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

bottle (2007).....appearance: muddy dark brown with a thin ivory head....aroma: sweet candied brown sugar and caramel malts....taste: sweet, honey, long lasting sugar sensation that is light on the caramel. medium bodied mouth feel with a good level of carbonation. this didn’t taste too hot for me as others have suggested nor did i feel like there was a hop presence at all....a very nice barleywine and looking forward to a vertical of this some years down the road.

2006 Vintage. 12 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with dirty martini. Pours a slightly hazy reddish brown with a large, bubbly off-white head that faded to a ring after several sips. Very pleasant aroma pf caramel, brown sugar and alcohol. The flavor is very nice with caramel, brown sugar, dates, and a little bit of peat. The alcohol leaves a warming sensation at the swallow, but in no way interferes with the enjoyment of this beer. Well crafted and very enjoyable.

2007 vintage. Poured with a small, slightly off white head. Little hop aroma. Some carmel and toffee notes in the aroma. Lot’s of raisin flavor and big upfront bitterness. Strong Alcohol. This one should age well. Definitely need to lay this one down for a year or two.

Old stock 2007 edition. Numbing alcohol caramel flavor. Notes of fruit and brown sugar. I must try this beer again after a year or so of aging.

Very nice beer. It ages quite well. The alcohol is present and warm. A ton of caramel and dark hoppy goodness.

12 oz bottle, 2004 Vintage, consumed 10/07. Pours a clear dark reddish amber with a small tight bubbled beige head with amazing retention for a 3 plus year old beer. A good bit of visible carbonation. The nose is burnt toffee and delightful oxidation with some madiera suggestions. Some brown sugar and alcohol as well. The age really works well with this one. More madiera and toffee than cardboard (though there is a little on the finish). No sweetness, though some brown sugar and hints of coffee. Very well hidden alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with soft fizzy carbonation. No sticky of cloying maltiness left. This really is nothing like fresh Old Stock. This rating doesn’t really belong, it’s almost like a vintage Old Stock entry should exist.

Sampled a 2003 vintage at Badgerben’s Cellar Reduction Night. Pours a dark brownish amber brew with a fast dissolving off-whtie head that leaves behind a fine film and ring. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, fruity melons, butterscotch and some alcohol. Aging has really done a fine job for this beverage taste. Taste is smooth, creamy, medium to full bodied, very light carbonation with a powdery caramel malt and candi sugar flavor. Finish is slightly dry with plenty of alcohol in the aftertaste.

12 oz, 2007 vintage. powerful and complex sweet and hoppy aroma with lingering alcohol. this would defiantly mellow out with some aging but i didnt want to weight. the taste is thick, powerful and sweet. malt and the familiar earthy english hops. the lingering bitterness is intense but enjoyable. the body is thick and sticky which causes that lingering bitterness to almost never stop. hides the alcohol in the taste but is noticeable in warmth. an amazing complex beer.
