COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.ís commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. Itís brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so itís a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coastís Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

2005 vintage Lots of alcohol. Some chocolate and moderatley hoppy. Opaque copper color, like an old penny. Not much head. Sweet with a finish like bourbon.

2014 bottle. Pours a clear ruby/caramel with a ring head. Aroma is a mildly sweet caramel, and dark fruits. Taste is balanced. Bready caramel and dark fruits. Medium-high body and carbonation. Smooth texture with a home dry finish. Overall tasty. Would be good aged.

12 ounce bottle into snifter; 2012 vintage, bottled in early 2012. Pours slightly hazy dark ruby red color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big caramel, toffee, toast, raisin, plum, fig, apple, date, cherry, brown sugar, brown bread, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, toffee, toast, brown bread, raisin, plum, fig, apple, date, cherry, brown sugar, light nuttiness, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light earthy herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, brown bread, raisin, plum, fig, apple, date, cherry, brown sugar, light nuttiness, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and balance of dark/bready malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy and moderately slick/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is fairly well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome old ale. All around great complexity and balance of dark/bready malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; and quite smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle, 2008 vintage. HUGE malty aroma. Mahogany color, with tight bubbles of an off white head. Tastes almost like it was barrel aged, but itís just a great combination of malts. Full bodied. Very good beer!

Bottle. 2012 vintage. A: Mahogany color with reddish purple edges. Whispy creme colored head, some lacing. N: Raisin, fig, cola, cherry, some cocoa and caramel notes here. (They are buried underneath the dark fruits.) Bready with big tobacco and leather notes. Toast. T: Big sweetness and a touch of bitterness underneath to leaven this beer. M: Resinous and thick body. Very light carbonation - just enough to keep this from becoming overly dense. Alcohol is very well-hidden. O: The 2012 vintage has aged very nicely. The cigar and barleywine note mix reminds me of sitting on my apartment porch and smoking a stogie after dipping it in a hefty beer of the same type ( I really need a synonym for barleywine. Double pale ale intentionally brewed? That seems too long.) This is a classic beer, and you can age it successfully if you have a mind.

330ml bottle served in a snifter glass. 2013 Edition. A: Pours a dark amber to nutmeg brown forming a small light beige creamy head. Medium to low retention and only very few lacings left. A small layer remains for long time on top S: Sweet and fruity. Strong notes of caramel, grapes and wood. Quite boozy. Earthy and bready T: Sweet upfront. Again, strong notes of caramel and dark fruits. Mainly grapes and plums. Notes of nutmeg and oak. Quite molasses with a considerable presence of alcohol. Very malty and sweet, in overall. Smooth and pleasant, Ale. Some grassy hops can be felt and the end is light bitter M: Heavy and molasses body. Low carbonation. Bittersweet aftertaste O: Strong but quite drinkable. Very well done. My second North Coast after Old Rasputin. No regret, just pleasure... [ BA Review @ 5/19/2013 ]

Awesome brandy appearance. Alcohol is evident but if itís the last one of the night the warming is appropriate.

Bottle of 2012 vintage. Dark brown, some head that disappears quickly but remains on the edges. Plums, dates, caramel, vanilla. Light sweetness, medium bitterness, full palate. Alcohol hits pretty harshly but, well, thatís what Barley Wines are. Itís a strong one, perhaps aging would have balanced it out. Suits well as a night cap instead of the regular whiskey or cognac.

750ml bottle of 2012 vintage. Pours a pale yellow brown color with a bit of head. Malty but a bit of alcohol harshness. Slight molasses.
