COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

2012 Vintage pours a deep red with a thin head that doesn’t last long. Aroma is sweet maltiness and caramel with alcohol, not too much coming in the way of hops. Taste is much more sweet than bitter to balance out the booziness, was somewhat shocked to see the ABV was so high. Has a medium mouthfeel with average carbonation. Overall this is a solid (but pricey) english barleywine, would be great to lay down a few bottles of each years vintage to do occasional vertical tastings.

355 ml bottle “2016” at abv 11.8% bought at HK Brewcraft in Central.

Looks: Translucent amber brown colour; Less than one-quarter finger head and soapy beige foam which fades in 30 seconds; Fair sticky lacing with barely notable slight carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant Amber malt, with strong Port wine, cellar musty, brett-like barnyard, caramel, toffee, chestnuts, dark fruits, floral, sugar, yeast and grass. Pretty complex!

Taste: Strong, nicely sweet Amber malt, with strong liquor-ish alcohol, liquorices, strong dark fruits, strong assorted yellow fruits, caramel, toffee, vanilla, strong molasses, yeast, lemon, quite strong bitter hops and grass.

Body: Close to full body, Very slick and creamy palate.

Mouth Feel: Amber maltyness is strong but not overtly rich. Slick and pretty smooth throughout. Just when you think the booze will taste like the strong Brandy-ish Belgian Ambrée, it is much more restrained as light liquor (hard to pin down a style) with kust the right amount of liquorice. So nice! Ample caramel and toffee with mixes dark fruits and apricot-like yellow fruits. Sweetness is strong but as all molasses and highly enjoyable. Slightly yeasty with nice strong lemon to round. Lovingly subtle and layered!

Booze: Besides the nice light liquor-ish taste, the 11.8% is not aggressive at all, quite well-hidden and not demanding to go down. Excellent!

Hoppiness: Floral and grass in nose. Lemon and grass in taste. Bitterness combined with liquorices comes on an abrupt, mid to high astringent sweet fruity finish.

After Taste: Slightly dry. Nicely sweet and fairly liquorish-bitter to mouth.

Comments: I thought this one could be a Brandy bomb like Bush Ambrée or Bush de Noël, yet the aroma is Port-like with some brett influence, taste is subtle liquor with complex fruity and caramel, very comfy and undemanding booze, and nice hoppiness. Aging it will certainly do more wonders to this tasty Ale. Highly recommended!

Brune rubis limpide.

Amber/deep red color with a little off white head. Looks nice. Aroma is subtle of sweet candy but with depth and complexity. The taste is sweet. Notes of figs among other things. A distant roastyness to the finish. Good tasting beer!

Påminner något om Founders Old Curmudgeon. Tror säkert den kan lägga sig något om den får stå sig ett tag, borde bli till det bättre. Köpte några flaskor och tänkte att jag åtminstone ville testa en redan nu.

Golden amber pour with small off white head. Aroma of malts, caramel, ripe fruits, grains and hops. Taste of caramel malts, belgian candy sugar, apricots, prunes and hops. Full bodied, lower carbonation, beautifully balanced, great beer!

Bottle @ home. 2012 vintage - cellared. Pours a deep amber liquid with a stable medium sized, tan head. Aroma is like opening a bag of candy - fruity sweet. Slightly vinous with dark fruits and loads of sweet maltiness, carmamel, toffee. Hints of milk chocolate. Warming alcohol. Taste is similar with a big body and great duration. Residual sweetness lingering throughout. Flavor is moderately vinous and has notes of dark and red fruits, caramel, toffee, alcohol, syrup, sweet candy, biscuits, spices. Vertical tasting with a young 2015 bottle: It’s reminiscent but with a quite distinct grainy character in comparison. Its fruity and sweet but without as much intensity and mellowness gained from the sweet candy/caramel/toffee character (which is so nice) in vintages if this beer.

Brown, slightly redish liquid with off white head. Aroma is mainly bread to me. Smooth, but rather anonimous taste. Not bad, but definitely overrated.
