Commercial Description:
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

2003. Amber-brown color, very thin head. Great aroma of caramel and alcohol. Amazing flavor of butterscotch and alcohol. Full body, warm mouthfeel. This one is quite young for a barley wine, but still it’s amazing, I can just think of what it’ll be like in five years.

2005 Bottle: Not much different about the 2005 batch, sampled in July 2006. Same notes/scores.

2004 Bottle: This year’s is every bit as good as the last one I had. Deep brownish-red color with a very thin beige head. Very thin lacing too. Rich aroma of caramel, malt and fruit. Full-bodied with hearty malt, caramel and nut flavors. Roasty character with the alcohol peeking through periodically. The finish is long and sweet, with a nice hops bite. Another winner!

2002 Bottle: Pours a dark brown color but held light throughout the glass. Thick and foamy beige head and nice lacing. Aroma is strong malt and alcohol, with lesser portions of hops and fruit. Rich bodied and it tasted somewhere between a Scotch Ale and Barley Wine. Excellent blend of malt, vanilla, alcohol and caramel. Finish is all malt and tart fruit. Good beer.

Bottle @ Plan B, Copenhagen. Pretty young bottle I guess. Aroma of dark fruits, sweet malts and some hops/barley. Lovely. Slightly hazy, dark brown coloured with no head.Initially sweet and very fruity. Toffee, sugar, dark malts, some spicy tones too. Some alcohol in the finish. Quite well balanced and enjoyable.

Bottle (2004) pours reddish mahogany, small fizzly off-white head, spotty lacing, with very light carbonation.   Nutty aroma, malty, with notes of apples and figs.   Noticable alcohol as well.   Subtle hop bite with a mild malt forefront.   Dark pitted fruit as well as some apple skin on the tongue.   Very smooth for a 11.4% example.   Mild body, slightly syrupy mouthfeel.   Finishes with a bit more hop bite, light malts, sweet, with figs, dark cherries, & alcohol lingering.   This is one to look forward too each Winter.

2005 bottle at T.H. Brewster. Hazy, reddish-brown colour with a nice little beige head. Delicious fruity, port-like aromas. Raisiny. Noticeable alcohol. Intense fruity flavours, with a lot of raisins. Sweet, but good balancing bitterness, ending dry. Warming alcohol, full-bodied, medium carbonation. A wonderful barley wine.

12-oz., ’05, 11.4%abv. Pours deep, almost murky brown with a thin ring of off-white head that’s almost thick enough to cover the top right at first. The aroma is huge with fruit--you can smell this beer from a couple of feet away. There are the faintest streams of carbonation rising (near the bottom in a semi-unusual hollow stemmed glass), but in the main this is an intensely thick beer that doesn’t encourage a lot of moving around by the bubbles. The palate feels beautifull carbed though--the bubbles are definitely there. A little bit boozy-hot on the finish, but not unpleasant at all. Truly a winter warmer. Toffee, cherries, port, and maybe a hint of gingery bite carry the palate. This beer is always a pleasure, even way out of season.

2004. Aroma is malty, caramel and butterscotch. Ruby with a small toffee head. Taste starts with a full malty profile, then enter those lovely hops, impressively followed by almonds. Medium bodied, extremely well balanced, bitter and dry. Fantastic! Thanks mds!

2005 vintage. Pours dark amber with tan head. Medium strength aroma of rich sweet malts just as a Barleywine should smell. Full and rich mouthfeel. Excellent flavor with several layers of sweetness: fruity, caramel, cherries, plums and some less sweet grain malt. Just enough hop bite along the some less sweet malts to keep the overall sweetness in check. Alcohol is moderately apparent. Very good beer and will be better with age.
