COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

2010 edition. Pours a cloudy dark amber. Small head that fades to nothing quickly. Heavy malt, caramel, dark bread aroma. Flavor has notes of fruit, caramel, roast, and very noticable alcohol. It is a bit rough around the edges. If it mellows with age as the brewer claims, it will be much better in the future. Right now it is just okay.

12oz bottle. ’08 vintage courtesy of wavers1. Pours hazy light brown, with a few bubbles, and a thin ring around the outside edge. Aroma is toffee, and caramel. Body is full, and smotth. very easy drinking. flavor is again toffee, caramel, with hints of chocolate. Incredibly smooth, no alcohol heat whatsoever. Clean, malty finish. Wish I had a few more of these around!

2002 version. Dark brown color with a full beige head. Sweet nose, very malty. Taste was well balanced with some notes of dates and orange. Alcohol evident in aftertaste. Can't wait to see how it ages.

This beer has a nice hoppy aroma. The taste is initially of very strong sweet malt with hints of spice then followed by a nice hoppy bitterness. Finishing hops leave a nice taste in your mouth. Best Barley Wine I have tried to date. I had this on tap at MacGregors in Rochester, NY

2005 vintage Lots of alcohol. Some chocolate and moderatley hoppy. Opaque copper color, like an old penny. Not much head. Sweet with a finish like bourbon.

Bottle from The Drinkery, Derry NH. Aroma is strong--could smell it from over a foot away! Smell is complex of malt, fruit, alcohol, yeast. Appearance is beautiful, clear, dark red amber with champagne-like sparkling. Mild, 1/2 finger width creamy off-white head with nice crackling sound from a distance. Pretty insignificant lacing. Taste is moderately sweet with fruity sense and only the mildest alcohol detected at the end (pretty well hidden 11.9%!). Palate is velvety creaminess, medium bodied with carbonation that gives it backbone until zippy kick at the tip of the tongue at the end. Finish is wet and moderately long fruitiness. Overall, there is soooooo much to like about this beer for all of the senses! Hard to find much fault.

2014 bottle poured into a snifter. Aroma was somewhat boozy. Appearance was a clear red amber with a very small light tan head that rapidly vanished. Taste was fairly boozy with dark fruits, prunes, raisins, plums. Palate was excellent. This beer is definitely a sipper and can use some age. I have multiple years of this beer and they can be aged a number of years with great results. I highly recommend setting some aside.

UPDATED: NOV 8, 2006 2003 Bottle. Wow, what a beer. Poured a reddish brown, but not translucent. Lots of spices, citrus, oak, and caramel in both the aroma and the taste. Alcohol is present and warming. This beer seems to have aged nicely and is probably at its peak.

2007 version poured a rich copper colour with a huge head. This was very malty, some dried fruit and cocoa. The malt overpowered the hops but still a nice balance. Really nice aftertaste, alcohol presence kept in check...nice brew I would happily invest in again.
