4.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: JAN 30, 2011 2010 vin 12oz bottle. Pencil-thin, fresh, sandy head soon dissolves to a speck or two of foam. Itís an inviting amber color, though murky, but prettily translucent: a lot like looking though a gem, actually. The taste surprised me because it is a pale blend, but it is a perfect one for my preference of stout. While the ABV 11.7% - 30% more than the same brewerís Imperial Russian Stout, Old Rasputin - subdues the nose to almost nothing (no - no boozy knee-jerk), the most prevalent aroma is coffee / toffee. This beer forgoes the oil of Old Rasputin for alcohol but sacrifices nothing to satisfying the palate. At this proof, this beer is made for sipping. But each sip is for savoring.
The glass empties to the last, most sensual sip - port notes. The well-nursed "dregs" of a glass of this barleywine are the most satisfying. Exquisite!

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Wonderfully sophisticated English style old ale.
Nose and flavor of apples, grapes, port, sherry, caramel, toffee, and pears in brandy.
Syrupy and yet almost ethereal body which is mouth-coating, and yet paradoxically sprightly.
Incredible execution of an old ale that will, undoubtedly become even more stupendous with age.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is the last bottle of a 6-pack I bought in 2001. Brown and murky with almost no head. Flavor is bready, caramel, raisins and maybe apricott. Alcohol is present but it is quickly wiped away by a very smooth, malty finish.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: JAN 24, 2008 This is really good. Pours our an amber/brownish color, with a relatively small head. Caramelly aroma. Malty, toasty sweet taste. Well worth $10 per 4-pack.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours deep amber with perhaps some orange when held up to light. Strong floral aroma with licorice and toffee. The flavor just doesnít do it for me -- soysauce taste throughout.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2014 bottle from cellarbrations super store in hami hill. Pours murky amber with a thin disappearing head. Body is full with low carbonation. Aroma is intense. Boozyness is very evident but is slightly masked by sweet burnt sugar, toffee, nuts and dark fruits. Taste is just as complex and amazing as the aroma. A sugary sweetness begins the palate which then develops into port. The finish is slightly bitter with a very warming hit of booze at the end of the palate with flavours of dried nuts, sultanas and apricots remaining as an after taste. Great beer

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
í08 vintage, sampled in a snifter. Was hoping for more based on the reviews as well as my affinity for Old Rasputin. Very aromatic with a nice balance between hops notes (grapefruit/citrus) and malts as well as an aroma I wasnít able to put my finger on. Flavor was well balanced and leaned a little more hoppy than malty. There was a peculiar dryness to it and what another reviewer referred to as woody...I think I could agree to use that term as Iíve not thought of one more suitable. Certainly not a bad brew, but not my favorite example of the style either.

2013 bottle. Pours hazy amber with an off white head that lasts. Smells of honey and oak. Drinks smoothly with mild lingering hop bitterness. Medium to full bodied. Tastes of honey, dried fruit, and rye. Buries 12 percent alcohol.
