Commercial Description:
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

2005 Vintage. Pours a dark red nearing brown body with rim head. Aroma is vinous with some caramel and dried prune fruit. Taste is malty, sweet and slightl alcoholic. Warming beer with a lingering bitter finish.

<<RE-RATE 9/3/07>> 12 oz bottle. 2006 on label. Pour is orange, brown and rust. Hazy pour with a nice 2 inch tan head. Leaves a bit of lacing on the glass. Aroma of burnt caramel sugar, and some slight metallic oxidation. Taste has some brown sugariness, orange peel and more of the wet cardboard oxidation. Palate was bit thinner than I had remembered. I think i waited a bit to long on this. 4,7,5,3,12 = 3.1 I will leave the original rating.

<<ORIGINAL RATING 12/22/06>>2006 Bottle. Deep auburn pour. Nice whitish-tan head that goes away, but a bit slower than most barley wines. Caramel, touch of sweetness, nice full body. Overall good barley wine. 7,4,7,4,16 = 3.8

Pours with a two-finger light brown head that fades quickly to a ring leaving some lace. Murky brown color. Good carbonation. Nose is malt/alcohol. Medium bodied. Starts with alcohol overtones and finishes on the sweet/mellow/alcohol side. $3.30 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

Deep amber color with a beige head. The taste is very sweet with notes of caramel and raisins. Finishes dry with nutty notes. Has a warming alcohol sharpness. Very nice brew.

Finally scored a bottle of the 2006 vintage. Poured a red to brown with medium off-white foamy head. Nose is rich malts, woody pine, and fruits. Smooth mouthfeel for so much alcohol which is well masked. Flavor includes chocolate. Nice slightly sweet finish. Would love to get some more and lay it down for a year or two.

fruity, piney aroma.Hazy amber color.Tan head that fades quickly.Full mouthfeel, kinda prickly on the tongue.Fruity flavors and alcohol evident. Finishes bitter but not overly.Think i will get some to lay down, i believe it would age fairly gracefully.

This review is for the ’05 vintage. Very tasty beer with a malty, whiskey, alcohol nose. A little sweet on the first taste but it balances out rather nicely with some bread and chocolate notes swirling around. Finishes rather dry. Very nice and something I’d purchase again.
