Nice - a strong alcohol presence countered with some nice bitterness and malt. Not as complex as some barleywines - at least not to me. But still fairly good.

I would expect more hops from a California beer, such those that are blasted at you in Big Foot Barleywine-Style ale from Sierra Nevada, but I can forgive North Coast for this because they already brew some wonderfully hoppy beers. This beer could also use some more yeast flavors -- some additional esters could make this beer more interesting.

Pours a fairly dark color for Barley Wines, at least in my experience. The aroma is mostly sweet malts and fruits. Peaches, plums, raisins, brandy, others. The flavors are not quite as complex. The alcohol is strong, the flavors are strong. An interesting and different Barley Wine, but a good one, nonetheless.

2000 bottling; mid-July 2002 tasting notes. Not very exciting. Age did not help; was big and boozy ~ mid-2000. Big alcohol burn and some vanilla notes…. why do I keep thinking “mediciney”? Sure was fun to drink though (“…take your medicine”). Oooooffff.

2005 Vintage. Excellent old style ale. Needs to mature to bring out all of its potential, however, it still is worth a fresh once-over.

Pours an amberish copper color, very light almost no head. Strong aroma, alcohol, malts, and fruit. Flavor was strong and malty, with hints of the fruit in there as well, maybe a bit too strong for me, but not too bad overall.

Pouring into the pilsner is a beautiful reddish colored ale, creating a really nice head. It smells very malty and upon the 1st tase, a slight taste of licorice hits the back of your throat. A very good and smooth ale

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a deep hazy amber/bronze with fading tan head. Thick aroma of spicy toffeeish malts. Slight chocolatey touch, resiny hint, and strong alcohol touch. Sweet caramel body with strong surfaced alcohol, which hurts the throat. Slightly chocolatey and caramel notes, slight zesty peppery alcohol bite, light citrus (tangerine) hint, a resiny hop touch and a long roasty dry alcohol burn finish. Too much alcohol which masks the other flavors. It would be great with less alcohol flavor.

2006 bottle; pours a beautiful clear amber with a slight deep tan head that dissipates very quickly; no lacing. Aroma of caramel, toffee, toasted malt. Taste follows aroma nicely, adding a warm alcohol finish and a touch of vanilla. A bit sweet and youthful as expected, but I couldn’t resist giving this a go; definitely has the potential for mellowing well; I look forward to a rerate after giving it some time in the cellar...
