this barleywine was definately not my fav of the style-good peer nose, murky brown appearance, but the taste was oily and kind a hard to describe-very malty with little bitterhop bite-i perfer the hoppier barleywines such as hog heaven and bigfoot-this was not my thing

2004. Caramel, malt and alcohol aroma. Amber and headless. Alcohol isnít noticeable taste wise, but it does burn the throat and you taste some hop dryness. Still i donít get a lot of flavor in this. Itís thick and it has a great feel in the mouth, but it doesnít have much flavor to comment on. Decent enough, but I wasnít blown away.

Sampled out of a bottle in a pint glass. Need to get a nice snifter for my barley wines/strong ales. As strong ales go, way too much alcohol in the taste. Aroma a nice hearty mix of heavy malt, raisin, spice and some fruit and a lovely dark amber color. Mouthfeel and taste too much like a smooth bourbon that brings this score way down (it is still beer after all...). Really looking forward to this one and a bit let down by the harsh flavor of overpowering alcohol that dominated what cold have been a sublte boquet of goodness.

Surprisingly red in color, I just knew this beer would be darker. Thin head dissipates quickly. Lots of alcohol and some dry fruit in the nose. Too much alcohol in the flavor with some fruit and a horribly metallic finish. Definitely needs more aging. Iíll probably re-rate in a year or so.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: MAR 2, 2006 Bottle. Pours murkey, swamp water like brown. Thin off white head that diminishes to nothing quickly. Aromas of sweet fruits, melons and caramel. Tastes like caramel and lots of sweet fruits, raisins and apricots. Very sweet and sugary. More chocolate as this warms. Alcohol is well hidden initially but more prevalent when warms. Finish is dry and bitter. Fairly smooth beer, tingles my lips, but they are chapped a little. Decent, but not what I was expecting from this barley wine.
I wanted to give this a second chance, but I just donít like this beer, way too sugary. I like a bigger hop presence in barley wines and Iím not getting that here. Way to sugary and heavy.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 Fl oz. dated 2004: pours cloudy brownish-red with a very minimal yellow-beige head which disappears quickly. Heavy malt aroma with some nuttiness, caramel, slight hints of raisin, and a whiskey burn. More than a little port wine going on here. To me the body is pretty thin with strikingly present carbonation. The moderately sweet taste turns to a strong alcohol burn- also very much like a tawny port, but without the body to support the intensity of flavor. Ends on burnt caramel with a sweet that lingers. Maybe I just donít like barleywines, but I wasnít that into it. Of interest: I accompanied the beer with some salty aged cheese at the end, and for some reason, it became more effervescent and smooth as a result.

3.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAY 2, 2008 2008: Score 3.2- a cold pour produces a two finger head that slowly dissipates to a silky canopy and a fluffy ring. A deep copper amber color spills forth creating aromas sweet and herbal. Full nectar w/ good carbonation creating a soft almost creamy texture. Nice! Fat, decadent, and malt driven w/ pounds of deafening sweet molases and caramel w/ a slight bitter up from a peach pit factor. Stone fruit weigh in heavily w/ not much of anything else but some herbs. The finish is cloyingly sweet.
2007: Score-3.4 / Pours deep dark amber w/ a full, semi creamy froth. Head retention is good w/ decent lacing. Aroma is weak and all I detect is fresh pine greens. Full nectar w/ ample mellow yet explosive residual effers. Alcohol right upfront w/ a sweet malty backbone. Not a complex brew at all. Theres the caramel, cherry fruit, peach nectar, and fresh pine. The finish is bittered moderately w/ a peachpit component and leaves a little alcohol on the tongue. Very warming and potent. *****
2006: SCORE 4.1 / Pours deep dark amber w/ a shallow froth. Aromas of sweet malt, aged plumb and cherries. Full nectar w/ ample mellow residual effers. Flavors are strong, rich, and sticky sweet w/ a peach pit bittering. Secondary flavors of brandy, tobacco, oak, black cherry, ripe plumbs, caramel, green apricots, citrus rind, celery, and more. Finish has a lingering bitterness that overcomes previous flavors. Not balanced. Alcohol flavors are present. This one will benefit from aging. Very complex. I see the potential but itís miles away sonny.
2005: SCORE 3.9/ A golden color on the pour with full nectar. Rich, sweet, and creamy. Light in color for itís genre and real easy to drink. Not as complex as Iíd expect from these guyís. Nice ballance and ready to go. Alcohol is dangerously well hidden .

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: SEP 16, 2011 The aroma is alcohol, oak, chocolate, vanilla, caramel, raisins and a leaves. The appearance is a reddish brown with a medium head. The flavor has all the elements from the aroma with a sweet dark fruit element that accompanies a butter scotch note. The palate is smooth with a lingering aftertaste. Overall itís a pretty strong beer and a good beer too but not a great one.

Bourbon! Lovely red colour. Very alcoholic. Tiny white head, flavour carries the scent out well. Tasting cups perhaps are not the best for appreciating beer, but this tastes like straight bourbon to me.

Sampled at Blind Tiger Very Special Keg Night 11/19/08: Not impressed at first, as there didnít seem to be much going on in terms of flavor. After a while, it warmed up and candy and caramel notes started popping up. Have to revisit this one for sure.
