2004 (bottle)poured into a tulip. pours dark cloudy amber with tan head, quick to dissipate, not too high. strong aroma a fig and grapes. taste is of grape and raisins with the alchohol present in the aftertaste. alchohol was present in the finish. I like North Coast Brewery, so an aged limited release I was very excited to try, I got my hands on this 2004 vintage, and honostly it was not that great. a little twangy, or sour. i have to say i was dissapointed, I just did not like it that much.

2006 bottle consumed 2/08. Dark amber body, white head, sweet malty nose. Very sweet, brown sugar, maybe slightly fruity, syrupy body. Not very impressive.

poured a cloudy brown with almost no head.
aroma of aged beer, port wine, alc.
flavor is strong. malty, figs, dark fruits, alc. flavors are nicely blended together. not my kind of beer, but i’ve got to appreciate the complexity and wellroundedness. I will get my hands on a 2008 vintage and try again, adjust my score if i like the not-so-aged version better. My main complaint is the aroma, too much old beer and old booze in that aroma.

2002 limited bottling: This reminded me more of a bad summer seasonal than a barleywine. Still, the alcohol flavor was well masked. They now just need to mask the flavor.

Pours deep amber with perhaps some orange when held up to light. Strong floral aroma with licorice and toffee. The flavor just doesn’t do it for me -- soysauce taste throughout.

2004. Fruity nose of alcohol, brown sugar, and flowers. Pours a hazy ruddy brown. The
smallish frothy beige head is fully diminishing and leaves no lace. The bold flavor is warm
and slightly sweet & sour. The finish is peppery. Overall a subtle brew but a stronger
alcohol presence than I generally prefer. The medium body is fizzy and feels alcoholic at

2005 bottle: Let it be known I’m not the biggest fan of the style. Enter the cloudy line where brandy and beer meet. Great looking beer, dark red, with tiny little bubbles underneath a tannish head. Simple smell of moldy brown sugar. Taste is very sweet and syrupy. Sugar dates, faint roasted malt, little bitter hops all topped off with a ton of brown sugar. Too sweet.

Too sweet! No hop flavor, and even alcohol taste is hidden by sweetness. I can tell that this is a quality brew crammed with expensive ingredients---but I wouldn’t buy again.

Bottle at HogTownHarry Fest 08. Again big thanks to Harry for this one. Syrupy dry malt aroma. I guess its a barley wine, with some soy sauce in the mouth. Nice US hops on there.

UPDATED: AUG 17, 2011 2008. 12oz in Chapeau glass. Deep ruddy amber, hazy, thin head. Malty, dusty, vinous aromas. Pleasant warmth and sweetness up front, but a mineral bitterness ruins the enjoyment. I have three more bottles; I’ll try to sit on those for at least several months and maybe the abrasiveness will drop out. RE-RATE 8-17-11: 2010 draft at Toad in the Hole. Cloudy brown with small disappearing yellow head. Stemmy, minty, spitty aromas. Big crunchy malts and rooty spice. Crispness is lacking.
