COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

UPDATED: MAY 24, 2005 (on bottle 2004 edit.) On the good side, this beer proves that I still have ground to cover in turms of tastes. This one was too hefty for me, way overmuch. Mahogony color and a small, lasting beige head. Hoppy , very; nose, with notes of wallnuts, earth, chocolate and alcohol- A very powerfull, allmost cognac-ish alcoholic a bit too high carbonation. Finish is lightly burning and with impressions of calvados(me don´t like calvados), wood and chocolates. Way to big and alcohol-flavoured -filled beer for me.

2003 ed. Very pleasant aroma, deep reddish tint, but I just didn’t dig this. Not very hoppy, sweet and nutty, but the flavor doesn’t come through too strongly through all the alcohol. Not bad, but not worth the price.

12 oz. Bottle. 2007 Vintage. Shouldn’t these different batches be in separate listings? Cloudy reddish brown color. Initial tan head that quickly faded. Small bubbles rising strickly from the middle of the glass. Overyly sweet smell of plums and yams. No detectable hops in the aroma. Thick and flat palate to this high gravity brew. Tremendously sweet raisin and added sugar flavor, overpowering the malt and obliterating any hops that are part of the blend. The high sugary flavor must be needed to make 11.7% palatable (as compared to say Samiclaus) but it makes it a tad too sweet to truly enjoy.

The high alcohol content is very evident with this beer. very little was done to incorporate other subtle tastes with the alcohol. It is very in your face and not really my thing.

Bottle from WOB. I hope this gets better with age, because I love barley wines and this is not a good one. Caramel, booze, and fizzy evervescent notes......

2003 Bottle. I'm not sure what makes a beer young. I also don't know why people thought this beer was amber colored. It looked like a deep ruby color to me. It smelled malty, tasted like brown sugar and alcohol. To me it tasted like an average barley wine. Nothing special about this beer, except the high alcohol content.

Vintage 2004. Pours small head but grows a little bit befor disapating. Smell and tastes of strong alcohol. Not a big single malt scotch fan and just do not a beer that tastes like one.

12 oz bottle-pours a tan head and amber/brown color. Aroma is sweet, syrupy medium malt, medium/dark fruit-prune, licorice/molasses, alcohol/boozy-rum/scotch, woody. Taste is sweet, syrupy medium malt, medium/dark fruit-prune, licorice/molasses, alcohol/quite boozy-rum/scotch, woody/spicy hops. OK carbonation. Kind of an English Strong Ale. Sipping. Not my taste and on the fringe for the style.

Good aroma ruined by alcohol. Sweetness and alcohol with bitter hops that stick to ur gums. Again ruined by the pushing alcohol. Not for me.
