zebracakes (959), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 24, 2008 2005 Bottle thanks to CMUBEERMAN. Pours opaque rusty amber, thin off white head. Aroma is dried fruit, malt, slight spices, graham, slight alcohol. Flavor is pretty much the same with a bit of pine, vanilla, and caramel. Toasty alcohol warmth, good barley wine.
DocHop (178), College Park, Maryland, USA Jul 25, 2008 2008: Pours a beautiful amber/brown with a small yellowish head. Very malty aroma, caramel, brown sugar, a little vanilla, and roasted espresso. Initial flavor is delicious caramel malts and sticky sweet, but then it transitions to an herbal, light hop finish that’s a little clashing. Maybe I can be patient and hold a bottle of this for a year or two. Good base, just needs some age I think. Swalden_28 (517), McKinney, Texas, USA Jul 22, 2008 Bottle from Kegs & Barrels.
Pours a clear deep red with beige head. Aroma of cantalop and dark fruit with very obvious alcohol. Flavor is, well, similar to Southern Comfort whisky, black licorice and is sweet. Mouthfeel is full with low-medium carbonation. Overall this one will warm you up, I am glad I drank it. I can tell this is a very good barely wine, but aroma & flavor just didn’t work for me....Im into strong beers, I just do not care much for aroma’s and flavor’s of cantalop, southern comfort, and black licorice. But I will stick to the ratings guidlines. This is a good strong beer, and I believe it accomplished what it was made for, I just do not care for it. rocbyter (595), Waterbury, Connecticut, USA Jul 22, 2008 2006 vintage 11.6abv. Strong malt aroma with a little softwood fragrances. Cloudy dark brown color with a medium dark tan head. Light bitter and moderate malts in the beginning with the finish getting sweet then mild alcohol burn in the very end that lasts. BrewCzar (33), St Louis, Missouri, USA Jul 21, 2008 Vintage 2006 bottle (11.6%) pours thick hazy amber with a quickly dissipating tan head. Sweet aromas of caramel, butterscotch, malts, and raisins. Smooth palate consisting of sweet malts, caramel, and bourbon/scotch. Great easy to drink barley wine character. Bhops (170), Dallas, Texas, USA Jul 19, 2008 Bottle courtesty of mar. Pours hazy amber, with little to no head. Aroma of vanilla, sweet malts, raisins and caramael. Strong flavor... much like bourbon barrel but less bourbon. Full bodied. really good sipping beer.
