Commercial Description:
As a continuation of North Coast Brewing Co.’s commitment to quality, our Old Stock Ale is crafted in the tradition of our critically acclaimed Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. It’s brewed with classic floor-malted Maris Otter Pale Malt and Fuggles Hops imported from England, so it’s a beer to be served proudly. Like a fine wine, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale is intended to be laid down. With an original gravity of over 1100 and a generous hopping rate, Old Stock Ale is well-designed to round-out and mellow with age. North Coast Brewing Co. Old Stock Ale is a vintage dated ale. We produce a small quantity each year and it remains available from release date until our stock is depleted.

Needs at least a couple of years to show its true potential and to land right on the palate. Flavour is sweet of caramell and toffe, raisins, figs and other dark fruit. Some cellar notes will also reveal itself after some age and compliments a otherwise rather simplistic but nice malt foundation very well.

Brassin 2004. (Rating #2789)

’09 12 oz bottle pours dark amber with minimal head into a snifter. Aroma of faded caramel malt, some raisin, apple, bit of booziness, molasses. Kind of an odd nappiness in the aroma that I didn’t find appealing... meh. Taste starts with plumb, caramel malt which gives way to spiced apples, finishing boozy and spicy. Soft carbonation with a slick feeling on the palate; medium to full body. Is this really a barley wine? It seems similar, but the profile is significantly different than many other barley wines I’ve had. Either way, I found it comparatively off putting in both aroma and flavor. Tremendously overrated in my opinion.

From an old rating note: 12oz bottle. murky orange brown pour. aroma of malt, toffee and caramel. sweet dark fruit and dark malt flavor with spices and light bitter hops. came off a bit medicinal. didn’t do it for me at the time, but I see the many favorable reviews and would like to give it another go.

12oz bottle, pours a beautiful amber brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is fruit, caramel, malt and alcohol. Flavour is brown sugar, roasted malts, fruit and alcohol, the alcohol being very dominant. Great warming effect on the finish. Wonderful barley wine.

This barley wine poured a dark brown colour, extra cloudy, with a quick lived, tan coloured, foamy head. To the nose there are scents of very ripe fruit, alcohol, caramel, chocolate, brandy, nuts and earth. First swig was thick, sweet and creamy with a warming, alcohol effect. Flavours of malt, caramel, ripe fruit (raisins), cocoa, coffee and roasted nuts are the most prodominent flavours. Finish is stron and warming with the caramel flavours, along with ripe fruit linger.

2009 vintage, 12 oz bottle from Princeton’s. Deep, rich caramel color with a thin, wispy head that quickly fades. Sweet boozy aroma. Flavor also very boozy, malty, notes of dark fruit with a sweet tangy finish.

2008: The taste is a slight burn of alcohol along with a twang of berries - perhaps cherries and a bit of honey or molasses. It was a bit sweet with the sweetness lasting into the finish which was also bitter.
