Named for the delicate engravings popularized by 19th century seafarers, Scrimshaw is a fresh tasting Pilsner brewed in the finest European tradition from Munich and Klages malts, Hallertauer and Tettnang hops. Scrimshaw has a subtle hop character, a crisp, clean palate, and a dry finish.

12 oz bottle into a footed pilsner glass. A: Pours a straw color that isn’t completely opaque. The head features a nice layering of foam, about three fingers high in total. Texture-wise, it’s bubbly and rocky, typical of the style. S: There are a decent amount of grassy hops here, along with a touch of fruity esters. Nothing remarkable here, yet perfectly acceptable given the style in mind. T: The first thing I notice on the palate are some hints of fruity esters. Afterwards, it shifts to a mildly hoppy finish. The hops here are grassy, earthy, lemony, and even a bit peppery. There’s a really enjoyable balance to this one, all told. M: Light on the palate, with sweeping carbonation. I’d reckon it could be a touch drier; then again, I like my pilsners bone-dry. Easy to drink as it should be. O: Solid. There are few other pilsners I’d go for over this one, but I’d pick this over many others, too.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Ariel’s place. Thanks kerenmk. 2015th rating in 2015! Clear golden with a white head. Weird aroma of store-bought hummus with za’atar , cardboard and graininess. Grainy flavor, sweetish, with cardboard, a spicy note, and a bitterish finish. Light-bodied. Not fresh.

12 oz single bottle from Molly’s Spirits. Clear golden appearance with a white head. Mild aroma of toasted, husky grains, pale malts and light spicy hops. Similar flavor, light hop spice bitterness with a crisp feel. Pretty clean and easy to drink, but a little bland overall.

From bottle to glass. Spicy hop, floral and orange with a grainy background. Clear brushes gold with full white head. A bit is a spicy bite and the orange is there again. Refreshing for a night outside.

Draft. Not much interesting aroma, which makes it all the more surprising when big lemon zest flavor hits the taste buds and keeps going. Slightly sticky palate. Summery!

Pours a light, sparking yellow. The brief head is gone in an instant. There is no aroma at all. Water is as aromatic as this beer. The flavor still manages to taste like a pilsner. I’m not the world’s biggest pilsner fan, so that might not be a compliment. There is a little malt, on the flavor, some fruity yeast, and then mild hops. Goes down clean. Leaves no impression.

Decent enough pils, but nothing too sparkly. Pale gold color. Hay, malt on the nose. Body is a light creamy with grainy and hay body. Drinkable.

Nice smell for a pilsner, grainy with some hops. Creamy light and easy drinking, mild bitterness in aftertaste, a pilsner with a bit more while staying simple.

On tap at Sugar, Peoria. Sweet pilsner malt and hay aroma with faint, spicy noble hops. Clear gold under white wisps. Clean and crisp pilsner flavour and feel with a moderate bitterness that leaves the balance a bit sweet. Medium body, medium carbonation.

Bottle from Sake Taniguchi (World Beer Market). Light malty nose, with grain, small fruit, and very gentle hops. Clear medium gold color, thin head, good lace. Thin grainy initial, a light hit of malt sweetness, and bit bready. Thin body. Decent enough pils, but doesn’t have much character.
