Named for the delicate engravings popularized by 19th century seafarers, Scrimshaw is a fresh tasting Pilsner brewed in the finest European tradition from Munich and Klages malts, Hallertauer and Tettnang hops. Scrimshaw has a subtle hop character, a crisp, clean palate, and a dry finish.

12 oz bottle into a footed pilsner glass. A: Pours a straw color that isnít completely opaque. The head features a nice layering of foam, about three fingers high in total. Texture-wise, itís bubbly and rocky, typical of the style. S: There are a decent amount of grassy hops here, along with a touch of fruity esters. Nothing remarkable here, yet perfectly acceptable given the style in mind. T: The first thing I notice on the palate are some hints of fruity esters. Afterwards, it shifts to a mildly hoppy finish. The hops here are grassy, earthy, lemony, and even a bit peppery. Thereís a really enjoyable balance to this one, all told. M: Light on the palate, with sweeping carbonation. Iíd reckon it could be a touch drier; then again, I like my pilsners bone-dry. Easy to drink as it should be. O: Solid. There are few other pilsners Iíd go for over this one, but Iíd pick this over many others, too.

Draft at the Spotty Dog: A pleasant and refreshing brew, yet it comes up lacking for my Pilsener loving self. Nose and body is Hay and grass. Body and finish could use more malt and hops. Some lemon notes that seem out of place.

To me, this was a pretty balanced Pils. It pours a nice, foamy head, but dissipates quickly. A snort produced a very subtle nose of some of the domestic, corporate brews. Still, I found it to be a very palatable beer with a mild finish.

Golden color with foamy head. Fine lively bubbles. characteristic pilsner aroma although not as pronounced as others in the style. Less bitter than other pilsners. Also detected is a little bit of what I would call a cheap lager (Lucky Lager, Hams, Burgie). Medium, lively body. Short finish

12 fl. oz. bottle from Club de Cervezas. Pours a clear golden color with a small white head that disappears quickly. Aroma is restrained with grain and hay dominating with soft herbal and flowery touches. Notes of lemongrass, bread, haystack, green garden herbs and some flowers. Quite weak. Taste has semi-bitter character, with biscuity flavors dominating hints of bread, grains, lemon and grass. Not bad but nothing outstanding here. Light bodied. Pretty dry finish, high carbonation. Crisp and refreshing. Drinkable. This is one efficient, by-the-book german-style Pils that doesnít show anything remarkable.

Bottle, Brewdog Leicester. Golden with a white head. Cereal grain with mellow lemon and hints of apricot. Light grassiness with damp cardboard and an oily, butter palate. Dry finish. OK.

Scrimshaw is one that Iíve put off having for some strange reason. Itís one of North Coastís most accessible brews in terms of distribution. Having now tasted it, I can say thatís true of the beer itself too. Nose is mild with bread and cereal grains. Flavor has smooth lager yeast and herbal hops. Feel is surprisingly sticky for the style. Thatís sort of odd for whatís usually such a crisp, clean style, but I enjoyed it.

Bottle at Hog Island. Pale yellow with a low head. Lemony nose, a bit of pineapple. Flavor is quite fruity, with pineapple and oranges. Decent.
