8/19/2007: North Fork Strong Scotch Ale is clear and amber brown/deep honey in color. There is a frothy beige head that is long lasting and creates think lacing. Not very much is apparent in the aroma except something acidic/minty (toothpaste?) that really seems out of place. It is also a a little sweet, but seems moldy like cottage cheese! The flavor is mildy sweet with some mellow, toasty maltiness, some light resin hop flavor, and some distance spice quality such as cinnamon or nutmeg. There is a touch of alcohol noticeable in the dry finish. As the beer warms, the alcohol really becomes apparent in the flavor. The body of this beer is medium and there is a bit too much carbonation in the mouthfeel. Overall this beer doesn’t really resemble a Scotch Ale as it tastes more like some sort of English bitter...
Draught sample at The North Fork Brewery - Pizzeria - Beer Shrine in Deming, Washington. Rating #8 for this beer... omhper (12335), Stockholm, Sweden
| 2.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Feb 23, 2006 Draught at the brewpub (6.4%). Clear chestnut brown. Neutral aroma. Sweet with clean mouthfeel and medium to full body. Heavy on roasty malt with obvious crystal malt character. Medium bitterness. A scotch ale needs better malt character than this. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | May 22, 2005 Dark amber colour. Light toffeeish aroma. Chewy, big toffee flavour with demerara. Long finish. Lots of hops, too, providing a bitterness that clashes with the rich malts because it takes the beer in two different directions at the same time. So definitely a soft bittering hop would complement the malts better. TimE (1368), Tokyo, Japan
