The devil made us do it. From the ABV and IBU figures to the fiendish use of Cascade, Perle and Willamette hops, Lucifer was whispering in our ears the entire time. Citrus and pine scents greet you and are followed by the sharp bitterness expected of an IPA. The beer’s true wickedness is revealed in the smooth Pale, Crystal 30 and wheat malts that surreptitiously broaden the beer’s appeal to more than just hopheads.

12 ounce bottle shared by MaltDawg at the 12th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering on 9/18/10. Pours a hazy amber color with floating particles. Medium sized head. Aroma of citrus hops and a slightly metallic note. The taste is citrus hops, caramel and a bitter finish that lingers.

From MaltDawg @ 12th Richmond Gathering. Poured a cloudy yellow. Aroma is high on grapefruit. Taste is quite high on the citrus grapefruit hops, though not too much else. The carbonation is fairly mild and pleasant.

(Sample Date: 9/18/2010 Source:Other) Floral citrusy hop aroma over moderate caramel. Clear golden with small white head. Floral hops with fairly robust bitterness over lightly grainy caramel malt. Lightly fruity. Medium body and mouth feel. Finish is medium and very bitter.

Tap @ Jolly Pumpkin, Ann Arbor - not as good as the siren. Caramel sweetness, but dry and a bit skunky.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy caramel color. Medium off white head. Some lacing. Hoppy aroma. Flavor of grapefruit. Really bitter mouthfeel. The Diabolical name is perfect for this brew. Its quite a concoction. Just doesn’t seem all that balanced to me. Lots and lots of bitterness, but nothing to offset it. Not my favorite IPA.

A: Pours a murky orange brown with a nice tall rocky off white head. Excellent retention and thick chunky lace. S: Aromas of bready malt, caramel, pine and grassy green hops. T: The malt is there up front. Sweet and bready with hints of caramel. The hops are mostly citric with a big bitter green dank finish. M: Medium in body, very bitter finish.

Pour from an 11.5 oz stubby bottle. Cloudy orange amber brew with three fingers of persistent head, siettling down to a frothy film as the glass is sipped. Interesting and complex aroma that seems to be a blend of resin hops, grassy hops, and a caramel maltiness. Flavor is similarly somples iwth a decent malt backbone and resin, citrus, and grassy hops playing in and out as the swallow goes down. Ends with a long but delicious lingering bitterness. Most excellent.
