COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The black IPA is a wonderful winter beer. Its hoppy character is sure to warm you up on a chilly Michigan winter night. Made with Chinook, Columbus and Cascade hops and Pilsner, C-40, Midnight Wheat and Carapils malts.

Bottle from/shared SWolf! Monster foamy head on this mofo... Nose of roasted malts with a nice hop presence. Taste is mild for a black IPA... Little roasted malts...slight hop presence, but not bitter. Kind of spicy or peppery. Medium body, on the lighter side. Overall: Enjoyable

Bottle shared by yourefragile. Thanks Michael! The beer is brown and somewhat hazy, with 1/4" of head and minimal lacing. The aroma brings alcohol, roast, licorice and hops. The flavor is decent enough, but I find the hop character lacking presence. Licorice and roast are the primary flavors, with notes of earth and pine in there as well. I’m not even sure that I would have identified this beer as a black IPA, had I not known. A decent brew, but not something I would seek out again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 07-11-2011

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle. Mostly bread on the nose with some roasty malts. Pours a deep black, with a huge frothy head. Great lacing. Very bitter but very balanced. The 7.2% is well hidden. Medium body that has a stout like quailty in the finish. This is a very good beer, I would probably would have giving it a higher rating had I had it in the cold winters here in Michigan. Maybe I’ll rerate this one later.

On tap at the Jolly Pumpkin cafe in Ann Arbor. Sparse notes: murky brown, not ashy as most BIPA’s, floral, burnt malt, coffee, citrus, astringent bitter, 6.6

12 oz bottle. Bold, bitter, and balanced. All good qualities to have in an ipa, dark or light. Pour was nice and full, with a beige cream head, and a dark black, medium thick appearing body. Aroma and flavors are quite comparable. Maybe would want just slightly more strength from the nose. Notes of toasted coffee, earth, and mixed fruity and herbal hop. Again, well balanced, a tasty bitterness, and medium bodied. Not too bad.

On draft. Pours a dark black color with a thick light beige head that lingers a while. Aroma of pine, citrus, roasted malt, and a little chocolate. Taste is ok. Very dry and roasty. Hops don't taste fresh though. Leaves a slightly unpleasant taste in the finish. Disappointing but still not bad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours black. Huge light tan head. Reminded me of a rootbeer float. Excellent retention. Plenty of lacing. Aroma of pine. Flavor is of bitter roast. Mouthfeel is of of dry roast. Definitely a heavier IPA. Decent Black IPA, but probably would have left a better impression on me in January or February then on a warm summer evening.

My thoughts may be a bit off from my peers. Pours a dark, almost black with a big tan head. The aroma has a lot of malt with some chocolate and coffee. The flavor follows with s long finish.

Bottle: The aroma consists of dusty chocolate, pine, and a touch of roast. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a huge creamy tan head with good retention. There is quite of bit of sticky clumps of lacing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate. The finish has moderate-heavy pine, dusty notes, grapefruit, and a touch of burnt flavors. It has a high level of carbonation that is rather prickly at times. Overall, the dusty notes don’t fit and the carbonation really needs top be toned down.

(tap) clear very dark amber colour with small tan head; aroma of roast, citrus; balanced flavour with long medium bitter finish, quite good
