awaisanen (1116), Irvine, California, USA Sep 2, 2007 On tap at the brewpub. Pours a dark brown color, mostly transparent, with rootbeer colored hues and a creamy layer of off-white head. Gentle aromas of nutty malts and mellow mocha greet the nostrils. Hints of caramel and nougat as well. Light bodied, creamy mouthfeel. A refreshing nutty maltiness refreshes the palate with a gently fizzy carbonation. I’d love to taste this one on cask; I think a softer mouthfeel could give this beer that extra push from good to great. Moderately toasted nuts and freshly baked bread. Clean and malty, with minimal hop or yeast character. The finish has a smidgen of grain astringency left lnigering on the palate, but everything else makes this a highly enjoyable beer thats both flavorful AND refreshing AND doesn’t need a huge hop punch to create flavor.
