3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Silphium (2972) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - JUL 3, 2012
Bottle. Cloudy, sediment-laden medium orange-brown body, thick puffy buff head. Complex nose of dusty esters, tangy wheat and a variety of herbal and grassy hops. Weird body, sweet, tangy and earthy with citrus and wet grass, overall a flat flavor profile and the hops faded enough to lack punch. Disappointing but I’ll have to sample a fresher specimen sometime.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 ADesenberg (304) - Ohio, USA - MAY 29, 2012
Bottle: golden with a big head. It’s got a ton of citrusy hops in both aroma and flavor, but backed up with a nice solid wheatiness. Interesting, in a good way!

Pours hazy golden with big notes of citrus and resin. Deep grain on the palate drives into a bitter hopped lingering finish.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Pailhead (3859) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - MAY 11, 2012
Bottle: The aroma is very heavy on oranges mixed with some peach, Belgian yeast, and orange peel. It pours a transparent amber with a two finger orange tinged off-white head that has good retention and leaves behind a good amount of sticky lacing on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with orange, peach, and some Belgian yeastiness. The finish has moderate grapefruit, light wheat notes, and pine. It’s medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Overall, it’s fall somewhat in line with the Belgian IPAs.

Thanks to Dad for this. Interesting beer. Thankfully not too much wheatiness to compete with the hops which were powerful and piney-grapefruit. High carbonation. Biting after taste. Serving: Bottle

Hazy golden with a huge fluffy off white head. Caramel, grain, and grapefruit aroma and taste with a crisp yet chew palate and a beautiful sweet fruit bread finish.

Bottled at Dayton Ale Feast. I think they succeeded in their attempt here: a nice, moderately hoppy IPA with a fuller body from the wheat. Despite the description, I didn’t find the hops that powerful but I thought the beer worked well.
