Ernest (4254), Boulder, Colorado, USA Dec 16, 2007 Draught, North Star (GABF 2007 week).
Head is mostly diminishing.
Body is dark brown.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (roasted grain, popcorn, husks), with a note of ash.
Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation.
IIRC, this was also an ale approximation of a schwarzbier. Rather rough. BillKismet (1444), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 30, 2007 Nice mahogany color, but no head. Very smooth, little carbonation, lightly crystal malty. Simple, easy-drinking, dark amber brew. Aubrey (2614), Denver, Colorado, USA Jan 28, 2007 Deep brown. Missing some head on my pour. Thin body; kind of smooth texture; nice carb level. Nice nips of darkness, like sweetened smoke, blackened caramel, sugared tobacco and dark toast ... but I yearned for more. Not quite enough bitterness to balance things out, either, IMO. Could use a richer malt base and a bit more bitterness and burntness, but that’s just me.
