Oakes (6819), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Jun 18, 2006 Dark brown colour. Rich, complex aroma with American-style big chocolate malt and a slight nuttiness. Starts chocolatey and rich, but gets thinner and more metallic (but nothing too dramatic). This reverts again into a clean finish with a moderately rooty bitter chocolate note. The overt American-ness of this dunkel may have Europeans and diehard lager fans cringe, but it’s a tasty brew. BückDich (4525), Boise, Idaho, USA May 11, 2006 Tap @ Brewpub in Spokane, WA<BR>Dark brown, ruby color, tan head, lots of lacing. Nose of sweet chocolate and creamy roast and caramel malt. The flavor is a bit yeasty with a strong co2 slap. The finish is average, good beer. JPDIPSO (4210), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Jul 15, 2004 Draft - Spokane. Dark brown color with a dense tan head. Light roasted barley aroma. Light roasted malt and fruity flavors and a touch of astringency. Interesting dunkel. Braudog (3463), Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates May 22, 2007 Draft pint at the brewpub; Dark reddish brown with just the average foam top. Can definitely smell the chocolate malt even thru a snotty nose. Sweet and smooth, this was the wrong beer to start with at this brewpub. Chocolate, chewy, almost green tea-like. Quite sweet; should’ve been dessert. (#2915, 5/18/07) Skyview (2768), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Jul 13, 2007 Fifth stop during the ABA Beer Tour ’07 in Spokane, Washington. Sampled on tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear dark brown brew with an average tan head that has a good retention and lacing. Aroma of light chocolate, some powdered mocha coffee mix, and flowery hops. Taste is more light chocolate, roasted nuts and very sweet. Palate is full bodied and very light carbonation. Finish is smooth, sweet and creamy.
When visiting the brewpub, ask the bartender for a "Northern Lights Black and Blue." This is a half Chocolate Dunkel with their seasonal Blueberry Cream Ale. This pours a hazy dark burnt reddish amber with a thick light tan head. Aroma of chocolate pancakes with blueberries. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonation with a fruity "Christmas Mix Fruitcake" flavor. Sweet and chocolatey aftertaste. (Thanks Lilly!)
