Bottled version under the Blakemere brand name, before tasting the aroma is of roast malts, coffee and chocolate, this is also found on the taste, though the palate was quite thin and watery

Sweet smelling black beer with fruity coffee flavour without the expected roasted malt. Chocolate flavour in aftertaste. Sampled Southampton Beer Festival 2008

Cask (gravity dispense) at GBBF, day 4 on 4 August 2006. Very dark. Almost black with a hint of red. Lovely aroma with lots of coffee and creamy chocolate. However, it falls away somewhat on the palate. Dry and rather thin with some bitter, dark chocolate in evidence. Mouthfeel is somewhat sharp. A beer of two halves.

Cask, The Southampton Arms, Black tan opaque colour, lots of guey chocolate, very full bodied, very well balanced, smooth, massive drinkability, some subtle citrus hops which only add to the drinkability of this beer. Excellent conditioned, some sweetness in the malts but not overtly so. Excellent bitterness, not aggressive. Really nice. One to enjoy when it’s cold and raining. Lovely. Win at the Southampton!!

Cask, The Crown, Nuneaton. Tarry pitch pint with a thick tan collar. Ashy burnt aroma with a touch of Bovril meatiness. Chewy, singed and cocoa-packed. Smoky burnt afters. Satisfies from first sip until last. Impressive.

Clear dark dark brown color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige to light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, chocolate, coffee, licorice notes. Cask at GBBF 08. Very near black and still with zero head. Nice spicy dark chocolate aroma. Lighter and more drinkable than you’d expect from a stout.
