3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Taproom, nitro. Black color wit a large head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Big milk chocolate flavor. Moderate coffee and some sharp roast character to help balance it. Not much bitterness, but just how I like milk stouts. Lovely!

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap in Minneapolis (MN)
More American than British, this sweet stout still manages to provide aspects of both continents. Trying it on nitro transformed it into a different experience that merited at least a few ounces. A full pint would not have been difficult to finish either.
Aroma / Appearance - A fluid black base absorbs the light under a head the color of creamy vanilla yogurt. Creamy chocolate, sweet oatmeal, and dry textures float in the air with a laid back profile.
Flavor / Palate - Velvet cake with rich chocolate icing flows freely across the throat. Oatmeal and dry malts then open into a polished finish like fresh truffles. The nitro smooths things out a bit but I imagine that the base still has a certain dryness. If other Northgate beers maintain this level of quality I need more than 48 hours to fully explore the local scene on my next trip.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pour on tap at Republic Calhoun, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of cocoa, roast, coffee, dark fruits into a bit of anise, hints of earthy and grassy notes. Taste was amix of caramel, cocoa, coffee, dark fruit, hints of anise, slight earth, touch of lactose, finishing fairly sweet, slightly dry.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Tap at brewery on nitro in bumped pint glass with commonmac. Dark with smooth thick tan head. Sweet and roasted nose. Chocolate coffee aromas. Very roasty and warming. Some toffee spice and good amount of coffee. Very soft and creamy mouthfeel. Finish is bitter. Decent, but wouldn’t take the leap with this one.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled from the tap at New Bohemia. Pours black with an off white head that dissipates nearly completely. Aroma has a good amount of sweet dark grains with roasted malts and a hint of peat supporting. Flavor combines peat, roasted malts and sweet dark grains making it a bit muddled.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Small pour, on draft at Winterfest 2014 in St. Paul, MN. Consumed on 1-31-14. Pours a medium to dark brown. Weak, roasted malt smell. Much dryer than I expected in the flavor. Smoky. Low in aroma and flavor. Too light to impress. Not actively offensive, but easily the most boring beer I consumed at the festival (although, in fairness, it probably had the lowest ABV), and ultimately my lowest rated from the event. Oh well, it’s hard to stand out in such a bland style category. I know Northgate wants to brew session ales, but it is going to have to go bigger if it wants to make a dent in the Twin Cities beer scene (apparently it is indeed starting to do so). I am frankly shocked by the good reviews that this beer has been getting simply because it is just so bland.
