3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft, at Northwoods. A lighter taste than most stouts. The same black body, but lacking the “oily” mouthfeel. A little of the hoppiness shows through here. As I mentioned with their porter, this beer is hampered by being force carbonated to the same pressure as all the other beers, when it needs a lighter touch. This beer had been renamed “Dark Walnut Stout” on their menu card when I tasted it, but the commercial description is the same. My take-home bottle still has “Kelly’s Stout” on the label, and it’s “Kelly’s” on their web page, too.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Pours clear black, small tan head, some lacing. Aroma is roasty, cocoa. Flavor is the same, light sweet, light bitter. Light body. Not as bad as its rating.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours ebony with a small tan head, mostly dissipating. Nose is of malt and cream. Only average viscosity and creaminess. Taste is mild, muted, a little watery, not robust and is of dark roasted malt with a hint of chocolate. Dry finish. Only an average stout, not in top tier.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle picked up at the brewery. Brown-black body. Thin, ever-fading beige head. Stout is a relatively forgiving style, so this one doesn’t suffer the way a lot of Northwood’s product does. Roasty caramel chocolate, decent enough, some mossy tones. Middle of the road, uninspired 90s brewpub style offering.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle from Skyview, thanks! Very dark brown with brown lowlights and a thin brown head. Aroma of raosted malt, dark malts, chocolate and mild molasses. Taste of dark roasted malt, mild chocolate and a bit of diacetyl. A touch over-carbonated and a chewy/chalky mish-mash that’s just not very good.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: NOV 19, 2011 Tap at Northwoods in Eau Claire, WI on Nov. 18, 2011. Reddish brown pour with a small soapy white head. Aroma is butter and roast, so is the flavor. Bizarre.

This beer is really pretty decent, but still nothing much to it. I like some more complexity.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle. Clear dark black pour, very little carbonation and a metaillic aroma. Flavor is thin coppery chocolate, a little stale coffee and not much else. Glad I only purchased a single, disappointing.

Pours black red on nitrogen, aroma is thin mocha and caramel. Taste is fairly weak, with a bit of coffee and roast. Average stout, but fairly drinkable.
