austone (1062) - Turku; Pori, FINLAND - MAR 24, 2008
Opaque ruby, disappearing foamy head. Nose is dark fruits, some herbs and all sorts of vegetables. Stuffy/earthy overall tone. Flavor has burned malts, some liquorice, dark fruits and herbs. Finishes dry, with ashy and burned bitterness, a bit porter like even. Medium bodied with quite big bubbled and coarse carbonation. Strange.

0.5 l bottle. Dark mahagony color, sparkling cola head. Sweetish, bready and roasty flavor with hint of licorice. Bready, roasty, caramelly and sugary flavor with licorice as well as weird woody and plastic off flavors.

esox (1038) - Oulu, FINLAND - MAR 22, 2008
UPDATED: MAR 27, 2009 Dark, reddish brown beer. Medium-sized firm and creamy tan head that diminishes slowly. The aroma is sweet, malty and spicy. Stange combination of gingerbread cookies and fruits on the nose. Some hops and fresh grass on the background. The flavor is sweet and malty. It has molasses and dried fruits (raisins and apricots). Same glue-like house flavor as in valdtejn. Medium roastedness, a hint of smoke and some milk chocolate. The finish is quite bitter with some chocolatey malts, light roastedness and "glue". Hides alcohol very well. The palate is medium bodied, silky soft and low carbonated. Sticky bitterness in the finish, but it´s a bit dull. Once again, a peculiar and quite diverse beer from Nova Paka. Somehow I´ve enjoyed their beers and this one is no exception. ( 7-3-7-3-14) Earlier rating: total 37 p. Medium sized head is blond/bege in colour. Forms nice lacing and does not disappear totally. Nice dark amber or reddish-brown colour is clear. Some roasted malts in aroma, but mostly sweet and a bit spicy. Medium body. Palate is grass-like sweet and spicy, malts are finely roasted. Some dry bitterness in aftertaste. Pretty enjoyable beer.

wunderbier (1434) - Tampere, FINLAND - MAR 4, 2008
A fizzy, tan, soda-like head falls quickly into a thin crown over a deep brown body with ruby highlights. Strange aroma prompts a double take; strong essences of walnuts, chestnuts and cola ride over waves of banana bread and smouldering, damp wood. Further back herbal hops, sulphur and brown sugar round out the olfactory experience, which feels rather sharp and stuck together in an overall sense. The flavour is a combination of bread, malt and toffee sweetness and alkaline bitterness, leading into a slightly chemical aftertaste with some vegetal components as well. Medium bodied with a tacky texture and fizzy carbonation. Feels rather astringent as well. I simply couldn’t get into this one at all with it’s odd chemical-like fermentation by-products. 50cl bottle, bbe 15/08/08.

DruncanVeasey (7144) - NUNEATON, Top 23, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - FEB 15, 2008
Bottle from Pivni Galerie, labelled ’Podkrkonossky Special...Novopacke Pivo’. Dry, chocolatey and impressively bittersweet. Cola brown glinting with ruby and topped with beige. Tar-like charcoal aroma dusted with drinking chocolate malt sweetness. Roast, cocoa, iron and tarry leather touches leaning towards lip-smacking dry stout, or even Imperial territory. Very drinkable and very tasty.

pivnizub (8800) - Bochum, Porúří, GERMANY - NOV 14, 2007
Bottle (purchased at the Pivni Galerie): Dark ruby amber coloured, bigger loose but persistent tanned head, sweet dark-malty and caramelly nose with a shovel of toasted malt and a dash of aromatic hops; medium bodied, robust sweet-bitter flavour, smooth MF; distinctive hoppiness in the sugary-caramelly finish. Good, well crafted stuff............

Bottled. Dark hazy brown colour with a low beige foam. Dense malty aroma of fudge, nuts, roasted malts with a light minerally undertone. Malty full flavour of toffee, whipped cream, nuts and dark chocolate. Long grassy aftertaste.

Gr0ve (2132) - Oslo, NORWAY - JUL 14, 2007
500 ml bottle. Dark brown, almost black with a ruby red hue. Medium-sized beige head. Fruity caramel flavours with raspberry notes. Some whiffs of alcohol to be found. There is also quite a bit of dark fruity malt flavours. Rich in flavour. Finishes rather watery and sugary.
