Cask pours like black coffee. Smells of licorice and toasted malt. Thin tan head yields surprisingly persistent laces. Taste of cough drops and prunes so I wonder why I liked it. Full bodied with a pleasant languor on the palate. In those early episodes of Coronation Street Ena Sharples could have drunk this (although I seem to recall bottled stout). Anyway once you have this you may decide that your evening is set. It will stay with you.

500ml bottle from Real Ale Corner, Brampton - A bit of a gusher. Eventually settled to a deep black body, thick tan head. Nose is strong espresso, chocolate, liquorice and burnt notes all the way through. Taste is nice and dry, good smokiness and bitterness. Very nice.

Cask handpull, The Crown, Nuneaton, 12/01/13. Dirty yellow beige cap over a very deep mahogany body appearing black. Excellent deep raisiny cocoa, burnt wood, burnt cinder toffee notes smoothed with oats and lactic hints. Sticky and burnt at once. Raisin, blueberry hints, scribble of marker pen, ashes aroma. Satisfying.
