COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Note: Unaged, nameless version pre-released in september 2007. Officially released as Bötet Barley Wine in september 2008.

Can’t remember who sent this to me, but thanks! Pours a clear syrupy amber with a gray head that dissipates completely. Aroma is full of sweet grains and caramel with just a hint of light fruit. Flavor begins with light fruit but is full of caramel, toffee and sweet grains with a hint of backing alcohol.

Bottle. Reddish brown color with a small off-white head. Small lacings. The smell is nice and smooth with notes of dried fruits, malts, raisins, chocolate and a flare of hops. The flavor is sweet and chewy with lots of caramel malts to the fore and notes of dried fruits, raisins, syrup and powdered chocolate. The finish is somewhat warming and bitter and has hints of sweet alcohol and earthy hops. Full bodied and smooth with a slightly dry finish, A bit one-sided at the moment but I really think this could develop some depth and complexity with a little age to it.

Coca colaish with minor head. Aroma is sweet from dark fruits. Taste is very sweet from raisin, dates. caramel, chocolate. Body full, texture, thick, carb is low. Smooth. Finish with sweetness. Hidden alcohol impact. Reminds of a portwine.

09 Bottle. Pours a nice copper/dark reddish color with a beige head. Aroma is filled with dark fruits like raisins and figs, some alcohol notes, brown sugar, caramel malts and toffee notes. The flavor has a fairly apparent alcohol flavor with the caramel and toffee, brown sugar, dark fruits like the raisins and figs and butterscotch like notes. The body is medium to full with a dry motuhfeel. Overall a solid English style Barley.

Bottled. The aroma has caramel and raisiny malts, some grapefruit hoppiness. Clear, amber-red coloured beer with a lasting off-white head. The taste is sweet, has toffee, hops, raisins mainly. Belly-warming beer. Alcohol present. Nice.

Sampled from bottle at SMOF. Vintage 07. Copper colour, pretty low head. Almond paste and cognac in aroma. Nice higher alcohols. Obvious alcohol in flavour, it gets too much, and becomes bitter. Nice solid maltiness, but lacking the bold malt kick I want in a Barly Wine. Not all complex. Or not that outspoken. Alcool dominates and lingers unfortunately after 2 years in bottle.

Hazy red color, small off-white head. Very oaky-like aroma. Fruity, sweetish, honeyish, alcoholic and oaky flavor. Still too young, needs maturing.

UPDATED: JUL 4, 2009 (Draught) Pours amber. Plum and raisin-like aroma with tones of flowers, fruit and alcohol. Quite yeasty and a bit too young. Some chlorine and salt are also notable. Yeasty and plum-like flavour with tones of spicy hops, fruits, flowers, caramel and alcohol. Warming, almost a bit burning mouthfeel. Some apples both in the aroma and in the flavour. Medium bodied. Too young, this will be so much better a year from now. Rerate July 2009: (Bottle) Pours light hazy reddish brown with a small off-white head. The aroma holds notes of dried fruits like apricots prunes and figs alongside a clear toffee-ish sweetness. The fruitiness also brings tones of candy, canned fruits and berries. Unfortunately, a wet cardboardy oxidation is also notable. Undertones of caramelized apples, walnuts oil, white sugar, lemon/tangerine soft drink, and earthy spices. The maltiness is almost wort-like with hints of almond past, grainy bread and glue. Only a slight touch of resiny/earthy hops. No typical Nynäs phenols = good. The flavour is medium sweet, light to medium bitter with notes of earthy caramel, marzipan, sticky dried fruits, ripe tangerines/apricots, glue, almonds, wort and bread. The massive maltiness is showing muscles but still lacking dignity. The mouthfeel is fat and sticky with a soft carbonation. Malty, alcohol warming finish. Near full bodied.
