2007 bottle courtesy of omhper. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Smells of sweet malt, light spice, chocolate, some coffee hints. Tastes of dry malt, some tart hints, chocolate, spicy. Dry finish.

A Mes rate: Bottle at Chris O’s Pre GBBF Tasting
2005 version for what it is worth. Black body with a really good tan head. Lovely chocolate malt, slight soy, decent coffee and fairly aggressive bitter hoppage. A little bit raw, rather a lot of alcohol showing and slight oxidisation. Good stuff but the rawness lets it down a bit.

Thanks to GT2! Watern dark brown pour. Nose and flavor are marked by peaty smoke, bitter dark chocolate, caramel Rolos, and a touch of cardboard oxidation. Nice and interesting, but not great.

Thanks to Ken for this. Thick black oil color. Aroma has some chocolate and liqueur but also has a lingering scent of plastic coming through. Flavor has some smoke along with bitter baker’s chocolate in a somewhat thin body.

Bottle, RBSG 2005. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, coffee, chocolate), with a note of smoke. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, heavily bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Very attractive malty-smoky nose, but I found it less attractive in the mouth experience...rather thin/watery and overly bitter. Thanks to Chris for the opportunity to sample, sorry I wasn’t blown away by it.

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2006 2005 Near black; dark greige, small head. Stunning, never experienced nose of ink, naphta, and ripe pears or peardrops. Then an onslaught of both coffee and smoked notes. Initially sweetish, roasted and coffeeish, ending in near-bitter roasted barley and/or oats, carbonized even, cigarette ash, but unfortunately - Rather disappointing watery texture, really not going on a lot under that black surface. Warming up, licorice. The nose was (initially) a true discovery; the (absolutely) watery texture, alas, nearly ruins it all. Mouthfeel, brewers, mouthfeel. Such beer ought to quench both hunger and thirst. Big thanks to Björn, Anders and the rest of the Swedish babblers’ crew!!

Dark brown color, steady brown-beige head. Sticky whisky-wood barrel and mould aroma with roasted notes. Medium-bodied, oily mouthfeel. Roasted, but with soft way, some whisky, decent.

Thanks to omhper for this long distance trade! Liquified tar black with hints of dark brown at the edges in strong light. The head is a light brown small ring along the edge of the glass. Yesterdays coffee grounds with bourbon filled chocolates, a few drops of liquid smoke, some woody and earthy notes as well. Not as full bodied as I expected it to be by the scent, In fact, seems a bit watery. There’s lots of chocolate and coffee here but it also has a bit of that tangy "You waited too long to drink me" taste that several of my Japanese micros had. Either that or this is what it is supposed to taste like. Certainly need a re-rate with a fresh bottle.
