1.7 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
Bottle. Smells like rotten fruit and pesticide. Tastes kind of flat, and vaguely like watered down lemon juice with some wheat. This is a bad, bad beer.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Fruity aroma. First initial taste was corn. Tasted like an American Standard as in Budweiser. Was looking forward to trying this beer. Bland and boring. Not impressed.

Deep, gold color. Yeasty, sour aroma (very mild). Nice, light, mildly hoppy flavor. Not a lot of ooomph, but nice. Has a mild yeastiness, too. Not bad.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
"Forty Niner" Gold Lager is an excellent entrant in the Lager style. The folks at the NABA also thought so, giving the beer a Gold Medal in 2002. Forty Niner Gold has a very pleasant aroma, though I could not identify specific elements. The appearance is deep gold, with good lace and a fine bubble head. There is a good balance of hops and malt. Could be a bit hoppier, but that might mean deviating from the style. The brew was a little less full-bodied than I like, but once again, sometimes you are simply restricted by your category.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: AUG 9, 2004 The beer after its release from the 12-ounce bottle sets quietly in the glass a clear gold color with a white head that is frothy in texture and the residual lace a decent sheet to cover the glass. Nose is malt, clean and fresh and the start malt sweet with the top light to middling in feel. Finish is lightly hopped and the acidity mild, dry aftertaste and once again a drinkable beer and one that goes down well with spicy food and is tolerable in the desert heat.
