zappafan99 (462), Ascension Island Feb 11, 2009 Taste 2/9 Bottle. Looks: Deep iced tea colored body. Thin, clinging head. Aroma: Blend of alcohol, wood and caramel malt. Taste: Pleasantly surprised. Expected a harsh flavor, but I like this more than the regular Bastard. Evenly balanced flavor. Even though it is heavy in malt and hops, the wood without smoke flavor blends well. So far this is my favorite Stone. BrotherGrendel (551), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Feb 9, 2009 A- Pours a clear dark red hue with a large off-white creamy head and thick, sticky lacing throughout
S- Wow, nose is dominated by intriguing oak and vanilla aromas, some sweet caramel malts, subtle hops, and a fair alcohol presence
T- Taste begins with some tone-downed caramel malts and vanilla and citrus tones, followed by pine bitterness and alcohol, finishing with brief dry hoppiness
M- Medium-bodied, quite watery, smoother than the original AB, lively carbonation
D- Smooth and unique, I have been a big fan of Oaked AB for a while. From the bottle is not as great as draft/growler, but this is still a highly drinkable strong ale especially compared to AB and Double AB. The alcohol is well-masked and I could drink several in a session with no qualms. mcjay (302), Neenah, Wisconsin, USA Feb 8, 2009 Deep copper color with a thick off white head. Aroma of hops with a hint of chocolate. Taste is smokey with a dry finish. Jsawyer (282), Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 6, 2009 Hazy copper-garnet body typical thick bastard head. Aroma is deep fruity almost chocolate malt, plus a vanilla oakiness, and typical aggressive hop presence. Very reminiscent of a barleywine or almost an imperial stout. Flavor is very much reminiscent of an old guardian or I guess I should say an oaky-vanilla toffee bastard. Palate is great, nice crisp finish. Very comforting beer to drink. nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Feb 5, 2009 Same as normal Arrogant Bastard, but with some oakiness that adds to the flavor.Copper color with a beige head. Aroma is strong malt and hops, almost like a barleywine. Flavor is sweet malt, citrusy west coast hops, a little smoke, and hints of oak barrel. Nice full palate. The hops these guys use are awesome - wish I could get my hands on some myself. BeerNeedy (60), Anchorage, Alaska, USA Feb 4, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours a cloudy copper with a small short duration head. Immediate impact of hoppy bitterness under layed with a smokey earthy goodness. I could drink a bunch of these. Indeed. PJClarke (610), London, Greater London, England Feb 4, 2009 Updated: Nov 8, 2009Bottle:
A syrupy looking liquor with a puffed honeycomb head. Fruity and deep hop nose with tick underlying malt characters. Big and strong with a huge hop hit. Slowly giving way to a smooth syrupy oaked flavour and a dry tickle in your throat.
A little carbonation and a round airy finish are a perfect accompaniment to the heavy mouthfeel.
Keg @ The White Horse:
A light vanilla and wood aroma. In the mouth there is a rich, spicy burn and strong hoppy bitterness paired with good, wholesome malts. Thick and smooth with tight carbonation. Great Butters (1623), Virginia, USA Feb 2, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours a clear purple with ruby highlights and large tan head nice lacing. Earthy, dogfoody, nose, like a scotch ale. Complex malty flavors of wood, green hops, caramel, toffee, with a alcoholic warming on the tail. Medium smooth body with an oakey finish. Pretty decent.
