NomDeBeer (397), Maryland, USA Sep 13, 2008 Wonderfull aroma of sweet fruits (raisins, plums) and floral hops. Pours a clear, dark red with a small white head. Taste is soft oak, citrus hops, caramel, and a touch of roasted malt in the finish. Smooth and very drinkable with the alcohol so well-hidden. Of the three Bastards I’ve had so far (ABA, Oaked ABA, Double Bastard) this is my favorite. Swalden28 (1439), McKinney, Texas, USA Sep 12, 2008 Updated: Jul 9, 2009Bottle from Kegs & Barrels in Plano, TX. Pours a rich, deep dark amber with thick beige head. Aroma of lots of caramel, oak, very malty, some faint hop aroma tries to break the the maltiness. Flavor is very malty, caramel, lots of wood, some faint dark fruit notes, hop aroma as well as a nice hoppy bitterness. Mouth feel is heavy body with medium carbonation. Overall, a great beer! thickfreakness (130), AUSTIN, Texas, USA Sep 11, 2008 Pours dark ruby color with a short lived beige head. Smell is strong of astringent oak, caramel, hops and some dustiness. Flavor is oaky, fruity, hoppy, caramel malt. Oak again is a little astringent and fresh for me. I much preferred the aged bottle I had in the past but I didn’t take notes for it. Not a big fan of this one while fresh. coyotehunter (542), , Michigan, USA Sep 10, 2008 Updated: Aug 26, 2009a wonderful addition to the original. the smokiness adds well to an already wonderful beer. my only complaint is the price they attempt to get for it. heynik1885 (53), tonawanda, New York, USA Sep 10, 2008 Awesome brew, smell is sweet malt some burnt wood, hops, taste is great lots of flavors ,malt, hops, nice oakness and some alcohol makes it a great beer, dark cider look, off white head lots of lacing on glass. dankbrewqueen (41), Morongo Valley, California, USA Sep 9, 2008 wasnt sure what to expect after having both the original AB and the double AB. I was able to taste the original next to the oaked on tap at the brewery, and let me tell you the difference is huge! i definitely prefer the oaked! one of the rudest brews yet! JasonG (700), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Sep 9, 2008 12 oz bottle - pours a slightly hazy deep amber color with smallish tan head. Aroma has roasted caramel notes, hint of roasted malt, lightly toasted american oak, fair amount of pungent american hops, slightly estery w/ notes of apple and plum. Flavor is full of chewy malts, caramel, oak, touch of cherry. Finish is firmly but not overwhelmingly bitter. Overall very nice. Not all that different than the regular AB, but still good. RunDWP (203), San Jose, California, USA Sep 9, 2008 12 oz Bottle. Aggressive, strong brew. (surprise, surprise!). A slight oaky, roasty aroma. Mahogany color with lots of lacing and sheeting on the glass.
Big flavors underlying the faint aroma. Lots of malt, a little roasted, a little sweet, and of course, the oak, with piney, resin hops. Maybe some raisin and vanilla in there someplace. Combining lots of strong flavors can sometimes result in a muddled flavor, but well balanced and conceived. The oak enhances the brew rather than muddling it or dominating it.
